YOUNGSTOWN

Downtown visitors will be greeted by signs welcoming them.

One “Welcome to Downtown Youngstown” sign was unveiled Friday on the south end of Central Square. The sign on the north end will be installed next week.

The signs, placed 2 feet in the ground with concrete, can be lit at night from nearby ground lights. Flower beds will be planted surrounding the signs in the spring.

Also, in a couple of months, about 60 new street signs will include “Downtown Youngstown” on them.

“It’s to help establish and recognize downtown as a new neighborhood,” said Bill D’Avignon, the city’s Community Development Agency director.

The city will spend about $5,000 for the street signs from federal Community Development Block Grant money, he said.

The Raymond John Wean Foundation’s Neighborhood Success Grant program provided the $2,200 needed for the two large signs on Central Square.

“We’re continuing to raise the standard of the look of the city,” said Sharon Letson, executive director of Youngstown CityScape, a program that focuses on city beautification.

In the past few years, the city has paid for street signs for six other neighborhoods, D’Avignon said. They are Idora, Lincoln Knolls, Brownlee Woods, Pleasant Grove, Garden District and Arlington Heights.

Are the bullet holes still in the door of the factory near the post office building? Nothing downtown for me 'I don't like getting shot at.

What is being done for the impoverished sections of Yougstown to develop new neighborhoods other than tearing down dilapidated structures? How are Federal Community Development Block Grant money being used in the neighborhoods?

There will also be signs going south on Market Street advising travelers to "scrutch down" while traveling through the southside due to the likely possibility of gunfire!!!

Nothing downtown Lee? There's certainly not an absolutely amazing children's museum, Oh Wow! Have you bothered taking a tour of the new history center? Stunningly beautiful. Of course, downtown is home to our teaching and performing ballet and well as our symphony orchestra and the finest collection of American art in the county.

Let's see Lee...downtown is also where our new $70million federal research lab is located as well as our 15,000 state university. It's also where the Youngstown Business Incubator has built an enormous technology campus where people from all over the world come to visit.

And how about entertainment Lee? The shows at the Oakland are the best theater in the region. Then how about all the sports and entertainment options offered by the Covelli Center? And the restaurant scene in downtown blows away the crap you have in the burbs.

Downtown is the hub of the regional legal community with all federal, state. county and city courts located there in addition to all the major law firms.

So Lee, other than being an idiot troll living im your mommy's basement, can you add anything of value to the discourse?
