The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines, recently recognized its Youngstown State University chapter as a Chapter of Excellence, the highest commendation a chapter can receive from the organization.

The award is given to chapters that excel in recognizing and promoting academic excellence in all fields of higher education and engaging the community of scholars in service to others.

YSU is among only 19 chapters nationwide to receive the award this year.

By receiving the award, the YSU chapter is recognized as a thriving organization that meets frequently, holds annual initiations and applies for Phi Kappa Phi’s select scholarships, grants and fellowships.

“Youngstown State University is honored to be recognized as a Chapter of Excellence,” Chapter President Christine Cobb said. “This is due to the hard work of past President Becky Geltz and the incomparable Phi Kappa Phi board at YSU and their tireless efforts and belief in ‘Let the love of learning rule humanity.’

“It is a privilege to be part of an organization that recognizes and promotes university, student, staff and faculty excellence, as well as outstanding community leadership,” she said.

YSU will receive a commendation letter from the society sent to chapter officers and campus administration, special recognition on the society’s website and publications, a specially designed logo for use in chapter communications, recognition advertisements in local media and educational journals and a $500 award.

Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. The society has chapters at more than 300 select colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines.
