Warren

Eastern Gateway Community College will expand its presence in the city’s downtown next year with the planned relocation of its Warren Center.

“Anticipated growth at our Warren Center on Market Street prompted our board of trustees to enlarge the college’s agreement with Higher Education Partners-EGCC Ohio for the relocation of our Warren Center next year,” President Laura Meeks said in a news release.

The announcement came after a board of trustees meeting this week.

The site will be announced in the coming months, but the new center in downtown Warren will include about 10,000 square feet of classroom, computer lab and office space. The projected opening is summer 2013.

The college’s classes are now at the Atrium Building on Market Street at Park Avenue. Eastern Gateway enrolled 179 Trumbull County students this fall.

Currently, the college is working with Higher Education Partners for the renovation of the Valley Center in downtown Youngstown.

The first phase with classrooms and computer labs opened in August. The remainder of the space will open over the next six months, include more classrooms, a math emporium, health lab, science lab, student services and administrative offices, student center and a bookstore.

In other business, the board appointed Dante Zambrini of Canfield as interim vice president of operations. The annual salary is $75,000 and the amount Zambrini will be paid will be prorated since he’s starting part-way through the year.

Zambrini served as a trustee for two years and served as superintendent of the Canfield City Schools.

The new board chairman is William Mullane of Warren. He is supervisor of school improvement and public relations for the Ashtabula County Educational Service and Jefferson Area Local Schools. Other officers are Molly Seals of Canfield, vice chairwoman; Marilyn Montes of Youngstown, secretary; and Sister Patricia McNicholas of Youngstown as voting trustee delegate to the Association of Community College Trustees and the OACC.
