The Feast of Saint Ursula Liturgy was celebrated last month and the 24th annual Distinguished Alumni Awards were presented.

Each year, the award is given to graduates of Ursuline High School who have distinguished themselves by dedicated service to the school and to the community at large.

This year’s recipients were Suzanne Morrison Fleming (’65) of Youngstown and Bruce Joseph (’71).

Fleming graduated from Ursuline High School in 1965. She attended Georgetown University as a nursing major and graduated with her nursing degree from Youngstown State University in 1973. She then earned a bachelor of science degree in sociology from YSU and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Kent State University. From 1973 to 1987 Fleming worked as a registered nurse in the surgical intensive care at Southside Medical Center.

She is retired from Youngstown State University’s Center for Human Services Development where she served as coordinator of the Northeast Ohio Regional Leadership Taskforce from 1998 to 2008. At YSU she was also a research associate and assisted area government and non-profit organizations with leadership development and strategic planning.

Fleming also serves on the Community Partnership Committee of the Ursuline Board of Directors and was a previous member of the Alumni Board of Trustees. She is past president of the Junior League of Youngstown, the Rotary Club, the Humility of Mary Health Partners Board of Directors and the Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic Board.

She is married to fellow 1965 classmate, Atty. Al Fleming. They have two children: Kyra, Ursuline Class of 1985, and Al, Ursuline Class of 1995. They have three grandchildren.

Following high school, Joseph enrolled at YSU where he earned both a bachelor of science degree as an accounting major and a master of business administration degree with a concentration in finance.

He began his career as a public accountant in Youngstown before moving to Dallas, and Saudi Arabia with his wife, the former Karen Getchey, his Ursuline classmate.

Upon returning to Youngstown to be closer to family and friends, Joseph worked for an investment advisory firm in Pittsburgh. In 1994, he started his own practice in financial consulting and investment management in Boardman. He has also taught as a limited-service faculty member in YSU’s accounting and finance department.

His community service includes Dorothy Day House where he volunteers and is a member of the finance committee. Joseph is a former member and treasurer of both the Kiwanis Club of Uptown Youngstown as well as the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mahoning Valley.

Joseph is a lifelong member of St. Maron Parish. He has served his church as a member of the finance committee, parish council, education foundation board of trustees and as a participant and volunteer in Christ Renews His Parish program.

Joseph is a member of the Ursuline High School Board of Directors and chairman of its finance committee. He is a member of the Ursuline Annual Auction Committee. He participated in the Centennial Capital Campaign Committee serving on the Fundraising Committee.
