BOARDMAN

Kevin Hines, one of an estimated 33 people to have jumped from San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge and survived, will be the keynote speaker during a suicide-prevention workshop that gets under way at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Antone’s Banquet Center, 8578 Market St.

Hines, who suffers from bipolar disorder, speaks nationally to high-school students, mental-health experts and numerous other groups about suicide prevention and the need for increased awareness regarding mental illness.

He is to talk about what drove him to make the 220-foot jump in 2000 at age 19, and the importance of living a mentally balanced life.

Hines also is among a handful of bridge-jump survivors to have gained full mobility.

Hosting the gathering are Help Hotline Crisis Center Inc. and the Potential Development Center. Sponsors are PNC Bank and the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation.

Hines, who has appeared on “Good Morning America,” “20/20,” “Larry King Live” and other talk shows, works for The Bridge Rail Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending suicides from the famous bridge. To that end, he’s working toward raising the estimated $50 million needed to install a safety net under the bridge.

The San Francisco man also is a strong advocate for erecting barriers on public buildings as a means to prevent suicides.

Hines, who’s written articles about suicide prevention and mental-health issues in America, said one of his primary goals is to reach out to military personnel and veterans, both groups that have a high incidence of suicide.

Tickets are $35 per person and $30 for each additional person with the same agency. Tickets for students are $20.
