‘Modern Family’ teen seeks split from mom

LOS ANGELES

A young star of ABC’s “Modern Family” is seeking to split from her mother, alleging physical and mental abuse, and her temporary custody has been granted to her adult sister.

The guardianship of Ariel Winter, 14, whose real name is Ariel Workman, has been granted on a temporary basis to sister Shanelle Gray, also an actress, after she alleged in a court filing that she was subject to ongoing abuse.

A judge last month ordered the actress’s mother, Chrisoula Workman, to stay away from her and have no contact with the minor pending a Nov. 20 hearing on the guardianship and control of at least $500,000 in assets.

Ariel Winter, who first began acting as a 7-year-old, plays Alex Dunphy, the brainy, bespectacled member of the Dunphy clan in “Modern Family.”

Weather Channel names winter storm

NEW YORK

To people who were caught in snarled traffic or had to shovel snow with leaves still on the trees, the storm pulling off the East Coast on Thursday was your basic nor’easter.

To The Weather Channel, it was Athena.

The network has taken to naming winter storms, much like the National Weather Service does for tropical systems. The Weather Channel says the names make the storms easier to identify and draws attention so people have time to prepare.

The National Weather Service isn’t recognizing the names, and neither are most news outlets.

The government agency sent out an advisory to its personnel Wednesday reminding them of the policy.

Biden to appear in NBC sitcom

WASHINGTON

Fresh off re-election, Vice President Joe Biden will appear on the NBC sitcom “Parks and Recreation” next Thursday.

The vice president’s office said Biden taped a cameo appearance back in July. He said Thursday on Twitter that “my whole family loves the show, and I had a great time doing it.”

The show’s executive producer told The New York Times that Biden’s appearance was taped under strict secrecy. The show was warned that provisions might have to be made to give Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan a similar cameo if word of Biden’s participation leaked out before Tuesday’s election.

Biden frequently has been mentioned on the show as an object of fascination by lead character Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler.

‘Dancing’ co-host Burke has cancer

NEW YORK

“Dancing with the Stars” co-host Brooke Burke says she has thyroid cancer.

Burke posted a video message Thursday on YouTube disclosing her condition and her plans for surgery to remove her thyroid.

The 41-year-old mother of four says a lump on her thyroid was found during a routine biopsy.

She says in the video that the surgery has been scheduled, but she doesn’t specify when. She says it will leave “a nice big scar right here,” tracing a line across her throat.

Found in the front of the neck, the thyroid secretes several hormones that influence metabolism, growth and development.
