Representatives from several labor unions marched through Niles on Wednesday in support of United Steelworkers who have been on strike for nearly two months from Phillips Manufacturing.

The 44 members of United Steelworkers Local 4564-02 left their positions Sept. 13 when workers shut down machines for a scheduled lunch break. The union members had been working without a contract since Aug. 9.

It’s getting cold outside, and its nice to see some camaraderie for the workers, said Gary Steinbeck, subdistrict director for USW.

“These workers are willing to stay out as long as it takes for them to get a fair contract,” he said. “They’re willing to meet at any time, but it’s been a little while since they’ve been to the [negotiating] table.”

The hope is that a contract can get done as quickly as possible, Steinbeck said.

The union members stated shortly after the strike that the offer made by Phillips left them no choice but to strike. Since then, Phillips has continued operating by bringing in workers from their other locations.

The city of Niles has since brought charges against Phillips for violating the city’s “anti-scab” regulation.
