Titanic expert to speak at Packard

Staff report

Bruce Caplan, an expert on the ill-fated cruise shop Titanic, which sunk in the north Atlantic 100 years ago, will speak at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. NW, as part of the Trumbull Town Hall lecture series. Tickets are $25. Call 330-373-1900.

Caplan of Redmond, Wash., has been a Titanic aficionado since he was a child. His book, “The Sinking of the Titanic,” is in its 18th printing.

“I want people to have empathy for what Titanic’s passengers went through by trying to get them to understand the many facts of what happened 100 years ago,” said Caplan, 69, who includes fascinating details about the disaster in his lecture.

Caplan said the ship’s collision with an iceberg went unnoticed by most passengers. Those who were awake at the time of the accident were actually pleased with the sudden turn of events because they thought their vacation would be extended.
