Home Instead Senior Care is partnering with area non-profit agencies and retailers to sponsor “Be a Santa to a Senior” program that collects, wraps and delivers gifts to seniors in Youngstown.
The program will run from Nov. 12 through Dec. 10. Trees will go up in area businesses on Nov. 12 at Wal-Mart on Elm Road, Curves of Boardman and Austintown, Walgreens in Austintown and Optiview of Niles and Austintown. They will feature ornaments with the first names of seniors and their gift requests.
Holiday shoppers are asked to pick an ornament, buy items on the list and return them, unwrapped, to the store along with the ornament with the name.
A community gift-wrapping party will be Dec. 13 and gifts will be delivered the week of Dec. 17.
Carol Hitchcock, owner of Home Instead Senior Care office serving Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, said many older adults are living alone and in poverty. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 9 percent of U.S. seniors 65 years and older live in poverty and 27 percent are widowed.
Supporting the program are Catholic Charities, Hands on Volunteers Network, Paisley House, Clare Bridge Austintown, Guardian Angels, Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority, area retailers, volunteers and community members.
