Local efforts to help victims of superstorm Sandy are under way, and Mahoning Valley residents have several ways to provide assistance.

In Austintown, donations will be collected through Friday from 8 a.m. to dusk at 9/11 Memorial Park, 1051 S. Raccoon Road.

“Everyone should feel the same way: We’re Americans, and we stick together,” said Pat Connolly of the Austintown Beautification Committee, which maintains the 9/11 park.

Participants are asked to bring clothing, water and nonperishable food. Brooms, mops, gloves, hats, face masks, tarps, tents, blankets, toiletries and over-the-counter medications such as pain reliever and cold medicine, are particularly needed.

Connolly said donations will be driven to the East Coast this weekend.

In Liberty, township firefighters already have sent one truck of donations to Staten Island, N.Y., and are packing another one full this week.

“One of our firefighters and his friend, they’re driving it right into the neighborhoods of Staten Island. They were talking to people there and ... they really have nothing. They can’t communicate with anyone. They need stamps and all the things we have sitting at home. That’s why we’re doing it,” said Fire Chief Michael Durkin.

Donations are being accepted between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. through Thursday at the Liberty Fire Department, 4001 Logan Way.

Firefighters have requested any of the following supplies to be donated: blankets, towel and pillows; clothing, diapers and goods for children; nonperishable food items and water; hand tools and construction supplies; Trac phones and radios; small appliances and household items such as picture frames and cooking supplies; and school supplies.

The chief said U-Haul lent a truck to transport donations.

Also, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Youngstown is accepting monetary donations to help victims of the superstorm online at ccdoy.org/social-action/disaster-relief-efforts or by mail to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Youngstown (memo line: 2012 Hurricane Relief Fund), 144 W. Wood St., Youngstown, OH 44503.

Catholic Charities USA will use these donations to support local Catholic Charities and other Catholic-sponsored agencies working in these impacted areas with short and long term support to rebuild after this severe storm.
