President Barack Obama took command of the fierce race for the White House Tuesday night, capturing battleground Ohio from Mitt Romney and edging ahead in other pivotal states despite a weak economy and high unemployment that crimped the middle class dreams of millions.
At home in Chicago, the president all but claimed victory.
"This happened because of you. Thank you" he tweeted to supporters.

Sorry to deflate anyone but , essentially , this was a "no change" election , when you take into account the Presidency , Congress & Senate.
The President has lost his huge majority or "mandate" .
Throughout the campaign , you could see an "offset" between Presidency & Senate polls .
When the Presidency poll was up for a party the Senate poll would be down & vice versa .
In the end , the collective wisdom of voters was that they preferred the devils they knew & voted for incumbancy . Only a handful of incompetents in both parties were sacked .
The new Congress & President will now resume work on managing the national debt & coming somewhere closer to balancing the Budget .
When you look at history , most Presidents are given a second term unless they are manifestly incompetent e.g. Jimmy Carter & George Bush Snr . The next President , based on history , will probably be a Republican .
Its a pity over $2 billion had to be spent on a foregone conclusion . That could have bought a lot of repaired roads & bridges in the Rustbelt .
