Sunday was “without a doubt the busiest day of the election season so far” for voters in Mahoning County, elections board member Dave Betras said Sunday night.

The last weekend day for early voting also was the busiest day of voting so far for the Trumbull County Board of Elections, one worker said.

“It’s the only time I have. For me, it is [the best time to vote] because I work,” said Rosalyn Penn of Warren.

It took about 40 minutes for voters to get through the process on Saturday, but it was closer to 70 minutes on Sunday, said Rocky Vadala, a door worker at the Trumbull elections board.

It was much less than 40 minutes most weekdays since early voting began, but the pace has been steady, Vadala said.

Betras said one of the reasons for the large turnout was efforts to get voters to come to the polls early.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers great Franco Harris brought some people out to the Mahoning County elections board Sunday, Betras said. Harris was campaigning on behalf of President Barack Obama.
