The Ohio State Highway Patrol has developed a one-hour training program for the public called Community Shield to help identify possible criminal behavior on Ohio’s roadways and tools for contacting the OSHP by dialing 677.

The training will be offered at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 and 19 at the Southington post, 3424 U.S. 422 (Parkman Road).

Seating is limited to 25; call 330-898-2311 by Friday to reserve a seat.

While driving north on I-77 last month I observed a dangerous driver crossing both the center line and the right lane marker repeatedly. At times the driver was completely off the road. I called the State Patrol and was told someone would respond. I stayed back a safe distance and observed expecting a response.
After observing the vehicle for another 20 to 30 miles no one had responded and the vehicle turned east on I-70.
I called OHSP back and they said they would take care of it.
I know they are probably busy but why bother to call.

While I can see some benefits in the program it appears that we could be developing too many wannabe cops. It is, however, just another example of government asking us to turn everyone else in for things like smoking, drinking, spanking our children, etc., etc.
