A Youngstown native is involved in the State of the Black World Conference III slated for Nov. 14-18 at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Ron Daniels is president of the Institute of the Black World 21st Century, located in East Elmhurst, N.Y., and a distinguished lecturer at York College City University of New York.

Daniels, 70, came to city when he was 4. He was founder of Freedom Inc., a nationalist/Pan African activist organization in the city, and at one time ran for mayor. He is a Youngstown State University graduate.

He was executive director of the National Rainbow Coalition and subsequently deputy campaign manager for the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson’s 1988 presidential campaign. Daniels ran for president as an independent candidate in 1992.

The gathering’s theme is “State of Emergency in Black America: Time to Heal Black Families and Communities.”

The conference will bring together some of the nation’s top black politicians, speakers, community activists, clergy, entertainers and resource people to discuss the current state of black America and strategies for action to better conditions now and in the future.

The conference is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Ronald Walters, known for his knowledge of African-American politics, who died at the age of 72 in 2010. Walters was director of the African American Leadership Institute and Scholar Practitioner Program, Distinguished Leadership Scholar at the James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership, and professor in government and politics at the University of Maryland.

The conference also will launch the Damu Smith Leadership Development and Organizer Training Institute. Smith, who died in 2006, was founder and co-chairman of Black Voices for Peace, an organization of peace activists galvanized in response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States. He also was the leader of the National Black Environmental Justice Network.

General registration for the conference is $100.
