Veterans Sunday

Beloit Friends Church, 18042 Fifth St., will celebrate its annual Veterans and Heroes on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 11.

Guest speaker will be Maj. Tom Sawyer, retired from the U.S. Air Force.

As part of the service, a special offering will be taken to benefit the Dan McVicker Memorial Scholarship Fund.

St. Elizabeth of Hungary Feast Day Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Nov. 17 at St. Joseph the Provider Church, 633 Porter Ave.

Members of the former St. Elizabeth’s and the public are invited to attend.

Sandwiches and light refreshments will be served after Mass.

Chorus anniversary

The male chorus of Greater Friendship Baptist Church will celebrate its anniversary during a program at 5 p.m. today featuring various males choirs in the city.

Society chapter

Society of St. John Chrysostom, Youngstown-Warren Chapter, will present a program on “Overlapping Jurisdictions: Promises and Pitfalls for Orthodox- Catholic Unity” at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 at St. Mark Antiochian Orthodox Church, 3560 Logan Way.

Guest speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Radu Bordeianu, assistant professor of theology at Duquesne University and president of the Orthodox Theological Society of America. He will first explore the current jurisdictional situation within Orthodox and Catholic families (the latter including Roman and Byzantine Catholic Churches), focusing on the existence of various jurisdictions in the same territory of each Church.

50th anniversary

First Presbyterian Church of Girard will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first worship service in the current building at 890 Churchill Road during a service at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The Rev. Albert Shakley, pastor emeritus, and Elder Dale Riley, stated clerk of Eastminster Presbytery, will participate in the service. Various congregational members will be sharing their recollections. New members will be received.

The First Presbyterian Church of Girard was formally organized in 1909 and began worship on the second floor of the town hall. Eventually the church bought the former Welsh Congregational Church building at 11 W. Wilson Ave.for $1,000 and remained there for 52 years.

In 1956, the congregation began raising funds for a new building. Goundbreaking was in October 1961. The first worship service at the new Churchill Road site was Nov. 4, 1962.

All Souls services

All Souls Day services will be conducted Sunday with opening prayers at 1:45 p.m. and the services at 2. Services will be in the chapels of All Souls Cemetery, 3823 Hoagland-Blackstub Road, Cortland; Calvary Cemetery, 248 S. Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown; and Resurrection Cemetery, 300 N. Raccoon Road, Austintown.

Benefit concert

The “Give Thanks” concert to benefit the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley is planned at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at Old North Church, 7105 Herbert Road.

Communion service

An Election Day Communion service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 330 Canfield Road.

The event promotes gathering at the Lord’s table in unity though participants may make different political choices.

Anniversary event

Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, 1210 Himrod Ave., is celebrating 90 years of ministry with the theme “Celebrating Legacy, Pursuing Destiny.”

The church, established April 22, 1922, in the Hazelton area, will have a live recording at 5 p.m. Sunday. The recording will be available on DVD and CD.

Elder J. Luke Shumpert, minister of music, wrote the title song, “Kingdom Agenda,” for the album that will include spirituals, Gospel and contemporary selections. Some selections were written by church members.

Church relocating

Pastor Monica Phillips is relocating God’s Church to Shekinah Glory Outreach & Drama Ministry, 3314 South Ave., with a service at 2 p.m. Sunday.

There is a program at 2 p.m. Sundays and Bible study at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays.

Evenings of peace

Catholic Charities and its Affiliate Agencies serving the Diocese of Youngstown will sponsor “Evenings of Peace and Reflection” at three diocesan locations this month.

They will be Nov. 12 at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church in Jefferson, Nov. 13 at University Parish Newman Center in Kent and Nov. 14 at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Boardman.

The events are free and open to the public; registration is encouraged.

Evening prayer will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by a creative reflection experience on the theme “Managing Stress During the Holidays,” provided by Catholic Charities’ staff.

Those attending will have the opportunity to view inspirational DVDs, engage in conversation and refreshments with others, enjoy a brief chair massage or pray/meditate in a special designated space.

The Circle for Spiritual Aid to Life, based on the teachings of Groening, a German healer and teacher, will offer a free 90-minute information lecture at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 S. Broad St.

The Rev. Christina Chislom, a member of Destiny International Ministries, a nondenominational ministry, will be guest speaker when the Youngstown Chapter of Igniting New Life Ministries meets Nov. 12.

The interdenominational ministry will gather for fellowship at 6:30 p.m. in Georgeanna Parker Activity Center in Boardman Park, Route 224.

The ministry will be at 7.

Gospel concert

The Rev. Ed Arrington II will present a pre-release Gospel concert at 5 p.m. Nov. 10 at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St.

Tickets are $10 and are available from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at Goldie’s Flower Shop, 1400 Belmont Ave., and from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at Second Baptist Church, 1510 S. Main St., Warren.

New Bethel seminar

New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St., will conduct its annual seminary at 6:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday on the theme, “Instrumental in the Hand of God, Impacting the Lives of Others.”

The program will be dedicated to the late Rev. Lonnie Simon, who was pastor emeritus until his death Oct. 29. He began the seminar many years ago.

Facilitators and preachers will include the Rev. James Bowie, Elder Cynthia Wright-Palmer and the Rev. Dr. Lewis Macklin II. Classes will for adults, youth and children.

The Rev. Kenneth Simon is host pastor of the event that is open to all.

Discussion will include how God wants believers to minister to the needs of others.
