Son accidentally shoots dad in Boardman

A Boardman man was apparently accidently shot in the upper thigh Saturday night when a handgun discharged while his son was trying to show it to another person and render it safe.

The injury of the victim, Raymond Cerni Sr., 51, of 4552 Montrose Ave., was not believed life-threatening. His son, Raymond Jr., 24, of the same address, was charged with negligent assault, a third-degree misdemeanor, said Sgt. Darrell Wagner.

The shooting occurred at 7:50 p.m. in a garage attached to the ranch-style house shortly after the family had finished passing out candy to Halloween trick-or-treaters. The weapon, a 40-caliber, semi-automatic handgun, was recovered by police.

Cerni Sr. was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center’s trauma unit for treatment. Cerni Jr. was still being interviewed by police Saturday night, Wagner said.
