Recovered in raid

BOARDMAN

Boardman police recovered an assault weapon and handgun, which had been reported stolen, during a drug raid Friday morning.

Apartment No. 5 at 6092 Applecrest Court was raided and two people were arrested. Sherry Bembri, 28, is facing charges of permitting drug abuse and drug paraphernalia. Harsimran Singh, 25, is charged with trafficking in heroin, receiving stolen property and drug paraphernalia.

In 2008, Singh was charged with drug possession. Bembri does not have a criminal record in Mahoning County, according to online records.

Teachers join union

youngstown

About 100 lay teachers at six Catholic Diocese schools have voted to become part of a union.

Teachers at three of the schools — St. Christine in Youngstown, St. Joseph/Immaculate Heart of Mary in Austintown and St. Patrick in Hubbard — already were part of the Youngstown Diocesan Confederation of Teachers. Teachers at the other three schools, Holy Family in Poland and St. Charles and St. Nicholas, both in Boardman, weren’t.

The vote this week means they all become part of the union. Barbara McVicker, confederation president, declined to divulge the vote breakdown but said the decision was by a sub- stantial margin.

Randy Rair, assistant superintendent at the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, said he doesn’t expect the change to bring much of a change for the Diocese. “We’ve always had a good working relationship with the confederation, and we expect to continue to have a good relationship,” he said.

‘Souls to the Polls’

Clergy from across the Mahoning Valley will join together to mobilize voters of faith and demonstrate the importance of in-person weekend voting opportunities by organizing pray rallies at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The “Souls to the Polls” rallies will be at Mahoning County Board of Elections, 345 Oak Hill Ave., Youngs-town, and Trumbull County Board of Elections, 2947 Youngstown Road SE, Warren.

Organizations such as Community Mobilization Coalition, the Ohio Baptist State Convention and Ohio Prophetic Voices are working to mobilizing voters in the Valley and across Ohio.
