Team 14.

That’s the way people in Austintown are referring to a group of 9 and 10-year-olds who comprise the Austintown Little Falcons 120-pound football team. With one more win, they will also be called champions.

During a forgettable 2-6 regular season, this band of 14 players was forced to put in more time on the field than most teams. Playing against teams that had enough players to make substitutions, this ALF squad had its players on the field for nearly every snap. That effort led to fatigue near the end of games, which made wins tough to come by — until now.

The team has caught its second wind in the playoffs, reeling off two upset victories to advance to tomorrow’s 120-pound Super Bowl against the Canfield Little Cards. The contest will be played at Hickory High School in Hermitage.

In its first playoff game, ALF avenged a regular season loss to Struthers, beating the Wildcats 44-0 on Oct. 21. This past Sunday, the Falcons knocked off No. 1 seed Boardman 20-6 to win the National Conference title and advanced to the Super Bowl.

It is the third straight season, the squad will play in the final game, after two straight appearances in the NEOYFL title game. This is the team’s first season playing in the YAC league.

Against, Boardman, Daniel Newman scored on touchdown runs of 50 and 78 yards and added a conversion score. Christopher Scott added a 3-yard TD run to round out the scoring.
