Mahoning County Board of Elections Clerk, Raymond Butler, taught students voting requirements during Robinwood Lane Elementary School’s Mock Election Oct. 18.

Robinwood Lane Elementary School fourth-grade students didn’t wait for next Tuesday to cast their votes, as they learned what it felt like to participate as registered voters during the school’s Mock Election Oct. 18.

“We talk about the process of voting and how it works. We talked about the Electoral College, casting your ballot on your own and election fraud. I expose them this early because I want them to vote when they are of age. When they heard that some adults don’t vote, they were stunned. Hopefully, this sparks civic commitment so that when they’re 18, they’ll vote,” said fourth-grade teacher Jeanette Tamulonis.

The Mahoning County Board of Elections staff was also present to teach students exactly how voters are registered and what the process entails. Raymond Butler, who is the Mahoning County Board of Elections Clerk, spoke with students and was excited to see them so enthusiastic.

“I think that everybody needs to understand the platforms that candidates run on. They need to have a good idea on what the person plans to do. We’ve been doing this for a number of years. When you do something like this there’s always a positive residual effect. Students will remember this and we want to keep that energy level going. I love teaching students because they are 100 percent of our future. It’s a great joy for me and my staff,” Butler said.
