Free haircut for veterans
For the second consecutive year, the Great Clips franchisees in the Valley will honor service persons by offering them a free hair service this Veteran’s Day. Stop into any of the nine area Great Clips locations this Veteran’s Day for a free service. Any active duty or retired service person or reservist is eligible. Great Clips is open in Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, Cortland, Hermitage, Howland Corners, Liberty, Niles and Salem.
Dietitian to address ostomy support group
Elaine Pearce, a dietitian at St. Elizabeth Health Center, will be the featured speaker during the November meeting of the Youngstown area Ostomy Support Group. The group will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 at the Humility of Mary Home Care office, located at 979 Tibbetts-Wick Road, Girard. The Youngstown-area group provides an opportunity for ostomy patients and their families and friends to network, while receiving ongoing education and information.
Pottery painting store open in Boardman
Canfield’s Eva Popovec opened The Art Caf , a contemporary pottery painting studio located at the Southern Park Mall on Sept. 22. The Art Caf Studio provides instruction on painting and placing designs on unfinished pottery and creating unique, one-of-a-kind Mosaic pieces. The studio has a large inventory of pre-fired pottery, including a large selection of non-toxic glazes and all of the brushes, sponges and supplies needed to finish a guest’s project.
Themed parties for birthdays, anniversaries, bridal and baby showers, scout groups, school field trips or ladies night out are also offered. The semi-private party area can accommodate up to 20 guests.

ABWA recruitment night
The Tri-Gold chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) will hold its recruitment night on Nov. 14 at the Fireplace Restaurant and Lounge, located at 2075 Western Reserve Road. The social will start at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m., followed by a business meeting.
The dinner choices will be broiled fish, pork chops, or chicken franchise with baked potato, salad, vegetables, rolls and butter. Beverages are not included and the price is $18 per person. The Poland library will be hosting developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader every Thursday in November at 10:30 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Fun Time for 4s and 5s
The Poland library will be hosting developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader on Thursday, as well as Nov. 15, and 29 at 1 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Elections 2012 at the Poland library
Children can vote for their favorite storybook character at the Poland library during regular hours now through Tuesday. There will be three categories: toddler/preschool, grades K-2, and grades 3-6. There is a limit of one vote per library visit. Results will be posted Wednesday at the library.
Lego my library
Kids, ages 6 and up, will meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Poland library on Nov. 27 from 6-7 p.m. Legos will be provided.
Put on your pajamas and go to the Poland library with the whole family for stories and fun on Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m. This event will be a holiday program.

There will be a blood pressure screening by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Poland library on Nov. 27 from 1-4 p.m.

Poland resident Dave Smith will present a program on some of Poland’s older homes at the Friend of the Poland Library meeting on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Poland Relay for Life meeting set
The Poland Relay for Life is seeking teams for the next event. For more information about the Poland Relay for Life and/or want to create your own team, people can attend the Nov. 15 meeting at the Memorial Baptist Church of Poland, 56 Water St, Poland at 6:30 p.m.
Girl Scouts team up with Goodwill
Goodwill and the Girl Scouts are teaming up for the Good Turn Day donation drive today. Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries’ donation centers in Austintown, Boardman, Calcutta, Liberty, Salem and Warren will be participating in the event, along with Girl Scouts in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.
Girl Scouts earn a patch by collecting re-saleable clothing and household items from friends, family and neighbors, and then donating these items to one of the participating donation centers on Good Turn Day. Girl Scouts are asked to donate three bags to earn their patch.
View historic wedding gowns
The Loghurst Farmhouse and Museum, located in Canfield on state Route 224, is hosting a Historic Wedding Gown Display starting today and continuing every Saturday and Sunday through Nov. 25 from 1-4 p.m. Wedding gowns from the Fowler family, local residents and Mahoning County Historical Society will be featured.
