Mahoning County commissioners awarded a $417,955 contract to Marucci & Gaffney Excavating Inc. for improvements to the bridge that carries Lowellville Road over Yellow Creek in Struthers.

The rehabilitation of the 60-year-old bridge is a joint effort of Mill Creek MetroParks, city of Struthers and the county.

The two-lane, 50-foot-long, single-span steel-and-concrete bridge, which carries about 8,000 vehicles daily, is at the main entrance to Yellow Creek Park. MetroParks leases the park from Struthers.

The project awarded Thursday includes installation of a new deck surface, curbs, sidewalks and railings, together with decorative lights.

It also includes installation of a pedestrian overlook at Bridge Street and Lowellville Road and widening of the park entrance.

The federal government is providing 80 percent of the funding for the project, with the remainder coming from county funds.

In other action, the commissioners passed a resolution in support of Austintown’s application for a grant that would pay half the $73,800 cost of acquiring 12.5 acres of undeveloped land on the north side of the township park for park expansion.

The application is being made to the Ohio Public Works Commission for the grant that would come from Clean Ohio Conservation Program funds.

The township’s park fund would pay the other half of the cost of acquiring the wooded land at the east dead-end of Ridgeview Avenue, which contains a stream in the Meander Creek watershed.

If the township acquires it, the land will remain in its natural state, said Darren Crivelli, township zoning inspector.

Located at 6000 Kirk Road, the 250-acre park contains an indoor pavilion, an amphitheater for outdoor concerts, athletic fields, a playground, a nature trail for blind and disabled people, a pond with a wildlife-observation blind, a picnic area and 100 wooded acres with hiking trails.
