Extrudex death

north jackson

The Mahoning County Coroner’s office has determined that John J. Tomlin Jr., 21, of Niles, who was killed in an accident at Extrudex Aluminum on Tuesday, died of “mechanical asphyxiation.”

An autopsy found that Tomlin was crushed after a metal rack he was working with several others to move at the company’s Mahoning Avenue facility was dislodged from its guiding wheels and fell.

At the time, the rack was stocked with aluminum sheets, which also fell on Tomlin.

Extrudex specializes in manufacturing extrusions for commercial, marine and industrial applications.

Tomlin’s co-worker Dallas Bright, 19, of Cortland, also was severely injured and is being treated for second- and third- degree burns at a local hospital.

The death has been ruled accidental, but an investigation is ongoing.

Officers said her car went off the right side of the road and struck a branch, which cracked the windshield. It then went through the back of a nearby garage and came out the front, they said.

The car then crossed over to Jones Street and hit the front porch of another home before it came to rest.

Police said no one was seriously injured, but Manilla was taken to Sharon Regional Hospital.
