1765: The Stamp Act goes into effect, prompting stiff resistance from American colonists.

1870: The United States Weather Bureau makes its first meteorological observations.

1952: The United States explodes the first hydrogen bomb, code-named “Ivy Mike,” at Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

1989: East Germany reopens its border with Czechoslovakia, prompting tens of thousands of refugees to flee to the West.

1987: Because of a light turnout at an Akron function, U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. postpones his announcement that he will be on the Ohio presidential primary ballot.

The newsstand price of the daily Vindicator will be raised to 25 cents, the first increase in more than seven years. The Sunday paper will remain 75 cents.

1972: More than 1,200 people at a candidates rally at the Mahoning Country Club hear U.S. House Whip Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill of Massachusetts praise U.S. Rep. Charles J. Carney of Youngstown as a man who is “filling big shoes” left by the late Rep. Michael J. Kirwan.

Dean L. White, 49, of Youngstown is decapitated when a runaway tractor-trailer strikes his car on Ohltown Road in Austintown.

1962: A football game between Youngstown University and Akron University is back on after agreement is reached to use NCAA rules on substitutions during the game. One of the largest crowds of the season is expected at Rayen Stadium.

The Vindicator’s straw poll predicts that Mahoning County townships and villages will give Republican candidates the majorities in all but the 19th Congressional District and U.S. Senate races.

1937: The Rev. G.W. Harrison, pastor of the Second Primitive Methodist Church, denounces the Federal Youth Council’s plan for a “boozeless night club,” saying “dancing is a satisfaction of fleshly passions and is contrary to God’s spirit.”

Mike Thomas, 12, of Struthers, who was climbing a tree near Hamilton Lake to see where shots were coming from, is fatally shot in the head by a 17-year-old hunter. Mike and three friends were at the lake roasting apples.
