NORTH JACKSON

An accident at Extrudex Aluminum, a manufacturer on Mahoning Avenue in Jackson Township, left one person dead Tuesday and another injured after a large metal rack they were moving fell off its track and pinned both men under sheet metal, said Police Chief Kenneth P. Frost.

The township police department and other emergency responders were called to Extrudex about 3 p.m. Tuesday.

John J. Tomilin Jr., 21, of Niles, was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries, while another worker at the factory was severely injured and sent to a local hospital.

Extrudex specializes in manufacturing aluminum extrusions for commercial, marine and industrial applications.

Frost said several workers were moving a large metal rack on guiding wheels when it dislodged and fell off. At the time, the cart was stacked with aluminum sheets and pipe.

The accident is under investigation by the Mahoning County Coroner’s office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
