President Obama voices his support for gay marriage

Published: Wed, May 9, 2012 @ 3:14 p.m.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says he now supports same-sex marriage, ending months of equivocation on a subject with powerful election-year consequences.

Obama says he has concluded that it is important for him to affirm that he thinks same-sex couples should be able to get married. He says he came to the conclusion over the course of several years of talking to family and friends.

Obama has previously said his personal views of gay marriage were evolving, a stance that frustrated gay-rights supporters.

Obama revealed his support for gay marriage today in an interview with ABC News.

I want to read an article, were a reporter asks a pastor, of an all black church, if he will perform a marriage of two men.

Obviously Obama does not want another four years of being POTUS and miss the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of being a full-time father while his daughters are still young. Good for him. Family comes first. Let the other Wall Street candidate ru(i)n the country.

"Christian marriage is an institution of the church, not that of the government. Therefore, the government should have no power to tell churches what they can and cannot do regarding Christian marriage.

Similarly, it is not the right of Christians, regardless of their view of homosexuality, to tell others how they are to arrange their own consensual contracts. Therefore, if a homosexual couple wishes to file a contract and they want to call it a “marriage contract,” then that is their prerogative and I have no right to forbid them from doing so. If they want to call it a “civil union” instead, that’s fine as well."

There was a time in this country when a black person was not considered to be a real person, but property, when interracial marriage was illegal, and women couldn't vote. Let's quit wasting time arguing about this - let gay people have a civil union, and move on to other more important issues like jobs and the economy.

Marriage has always been a union b/w man and women, in every culture and every social structure on this plant. DO we really want our society to redefine what is a marriage?

I can't wait to see the divorce rates between same sex couples. i bet they make the heteromarriages look successful. I'd say 60 percent divorce amongst gays.

There is no explaination for this other than trying to get a few more votes. Needless to say I think this will cost him more votes from one time supporters than it will generate new support. Is there nothing some will say or do to get elected? Pipeline bad.....gay marriage good.. tax cuts bad.....

We need leadership in Washington that supports a strong moral America. Marriage between a man and a woman contributed the most to building America and their status should not be undermined.

How can you be a Catholic and vote for pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage Obama?

If you do vote for him you might as well quit the church because you have elevated Obama ahead of God.
