Hoodies rally seeks justice for Trayvon Martin

Hoodies rally seeks justice for Trayvon Martin

YOUNGSTOWN

Many who attended the Hoodies with a Purpose rally Friday, most wearing hooded sweatshirts, say they want swifter justice in the Feb. 26 slaying of Trayvon Martin in Florida.

Others, including one of the rally’s organizer, Kellie Kirksey of Boardman, a holistic psychotherapist at the Cleveland Clinic, also urged that love come to the front “because love heals and justice can only come through love.”

Between 30 and 40 attended the rally, which started at 4 p.m. in front of the Mahoning County Court House, holding signs demanding “Justice” and asking for “Peace.”

The 17-year-old’s killing has raised protests here and around the country. He was shot Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla., by George Zimmerman, member of a block watch, who says he was assaulted by the teen and shot in self-defense.

The protesters here chanted, “No justice, no peace” and “Stop the violence,” as they marched along Market Street, at least one wearing at T-shirt she had made with Trayvon Martin’s likeness and the words “Justice for Trayvon” on the front.

“I have a grandchild too. Where did it become a law that you can’t go to the store wearing a hoodie,” said Marilyn Moore of Youngstown.

“There is no justice in this case. If the shooter had been anyone else, he would have called the police. I haven’t seen any evidence he was attacked,” said Moore.

“I feel it is unfair. The shooter should have been arrested and incident thoroughly investigated,” said Liz Pless of Youngstown.

Pless doesn’t view the shooting as racially motivated. But it was a child. The excessive force was unnecessary, she said.

“If the shooter was in so much danger, why was he following the boy. He could have been my child. Just because you are on the block watch, it don’t give you the right to kill someone,” she said.

Marty Murphy, who brought his young nephew along “so he can learn,” said if a black man had killed the teen, he would have been charged the first day. “I don’t think they are doing justice in that case.”

Zimmerman has not been charged in the shooting.

A response needs to come from cities across America, because an injustice is being done to Trayvon Martin and his family, said the Rev. Kenneth Simon, pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Youngstown.

As the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. said: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” the Rev. Mr. Simon said.

“There should be intensive investigation and an arrest in the case. Based on the 911 tapes and pictures of Zimmerman, there is no evidence he was attacked. This was racial profiling in its highest order,” he said.

“My intention,” said Kirksey in organizing the rally, “is to spread more love and kindness rather than hate and fear.”

“When people respond out of fear, tragedy happens. We need to come together as a people. This needs to stop,” she said.

I have personally had it with the race hustling poverty pimps otherwise known as Sharpton and Jackson. Nobody has all the facts in this case yet the pimps are out there rabble rousing and trying to create a sense that there is some racial injustice. Will African Americans now start rioting in Latino neighborhoods? Are the race pimps so desperate for attention to further their own agenda's that they are really going to keep whipping this dead Hispanic horse until it turns white???

What's Sharpton and Jackson got to do with it. I haven't seen them mentioned anywhere other than these comments.
Did you actually listen to the 911 call from Zimmerman? He had a gun, He was persuing this kid. He called 911 and the dispatcher very clearly instructed him NOT to persue the boy and he did it anyway. There was absolutely NOTHING on that tape about the boy attacking him.
You're right, we do not have all the facts. But we do know what we heard on that tape. That's enough for me to know that a wrong has been done.

PG You haven't heard anything from Jackson or Sharpton. Maybe you should watch different news programs. They have been all over this on MSNBC and CNN and others. As far as the tapes I really don't believe them either. They could have been tampered with, The brother was TV last night. How come no one is mentioning the bounty put on this man's head by the nlack panthers. To me that is a real threat to us all if we were at the same place as he was and someone statred shooting. How about Spike Lee teling people that he lived at an adress of someone else maned Zimmerman. He put those people lives in danger, don't you think. Or is this kind of stuff okay?

Is that fact, peggy or are you just regurgitating what MSNBC tells you? You can find police reports, maps of the crime scene and witness statements online. Get crackin.

What really cracks me up is these fools can have a rally for some fool who gets himself whacked down in FLA (who was working his way very quickly to being a ward of the state anyway, see http://webcache.googleusercontent.com... ). But yet, how many juveniles have been killed in the Youngstown area this year? No one cares!

@LawDoc

Amen!! My question is where were all these people when 2 absolutely innocent old people were gunned down in cold blood leaving church of all places?!!!! And the other one lost her leg! They show pictures of this kid in tv and in the magazines and he looks like he's 14, that's because he was 14 in the pictures! How about the ones online of him with his tattoos and gold teeth? I saw them. Someone tryin to be a "gangsta"? Lol!

"“I have a grandchild too. Where did it become a law that you can’t go to the store wearing a hoodie,” said Marilyn Moore of Youngstown."

What a stupid comment. Just maybe because 99.9% of robberies, especially Convenient stores, the prep was wearing some type of a hoodie.

""The protesters here chanted, “No justice, no peace” and “Stop the violence,” as they marched along Market Street, at least one wearing at T-shirt she had made with Trayvon Martin’s likeness and the words “Justice for Trayvon” on the front.""

She better hope she don't get sued for copyright infringement, since Martin's mom patented his name and saying. Disgusting.

"“If the shooter was in so much danger, why was he following the boy. He could have been my child. Just because you are on the block watch, it don’t give you the right to kill someone,” she said.""

Guess she was there that night and knows the whole story.

""Marty Murphy, who brought his young nephew along “so he can learn,” said if a black man had killed the teen, he would have been charged the first day. “I don’t think they are doing justice in that case.”""

So this Einstein is already showing his young nephew about hating the Police, hating whites and being a racist. This kid already has Strike One on him, a idiot Uncle.

""This was racial profiling in its highest order,” he said.""

And this from a REVEREND, who should be bringing Peace and Love to the masses, not racist comments.

""The protesters here chanted, “No justice, no peace” and “Stop the violence,” as they marched along Market Street......""

Why don't these protesters protest the HUGE problem of young blacks killing other blacks, read the Chicago news, EVERYDAY, this is happening. No, they use all there energy on a WHITE HISPANIC (which btw no one still has come up with what that race is) that everyone is accusing when they don't have all the FACTS, just what the Media tells them. Talk about being brainwashed. Society today I guess.....don't know where there priorities are.

Enough with that argument usmc. You make no sense. YPD jumped on that case, they caught agee and now hes on trial. I was called for jury duty. In sanford, they got the guy, let him go for a month, and nothing would have happened if there wasnt a public outrage.
Typical repub argument. When youre wrong, its msnbcs fault for reporting the truth. When your wrong, its because the dems made you do it. Like the "war on women". The dems made them try to put vagina legislation on the highway bill.

Just look at all your bigoted posts. A black kid with a hoodie on he is obviously up to no good. When my boys walk home from poland schools with their hood up, because they are white, they get no second glance. And I keep getting asked "and do they have their pants down showing their underwear?" For Ch*^sts sake! No they dont, and its because that isnt the style in poland school.

@thinkthentalk

My argument is this, those people were completely helpless old people. I do make sense. There was no national out cry for these two when they were killed by no good POS thugs. Yes he was let go but do you know the complete facts of the case? Were you there? And who said i was a repub? You ever heard the saying "when you assume you make an ass out of me and u"? Stop assuming and you'll be ok.

And why was it necessary to have a national outcry? The YPD caught these two pieces OS, and now they are trial. I know they were innocent old people. They might have been MY parents. My parents went to St Dominics 10:30 mass for 40 years. But there is no foolish stand your ground law here, YPD didnt let them go after they arrested them.

No they didn't cause there was solid evidence what took place. I do believe that they should have charged him with something at least until there was a very thorough investigation done. YPD did catch them, not right after they did it. Thats my point. YPD didn't catch them until a month or so later. Where were the civil groups putting a bounty out on these POS's lives? Oh thats right if a "white" group were to do that it would racist, unthinkable and someone would be punished for saying it. And as far as that law that obviously needs reviewed or done a way with completely.

Well yeah, they had to catch them first. Find out who they were, and catch them. And i think they did a good job. How do you find these guys when you dont know who they are?
The difference is, here, black, white, green, or yellow, YPD went lookin, and found them.

In fla, the first prosecuter recommended arresting zimmerman, then he got overruled because his boss said since it wasnt an open and shut case, forget about it. Now dont tell me i wasnt there because this fact came directly from the sanford police statement. So, a person gets killed, and a bureaucrat decides justice aint worth the trouble. THAT is the outrage that warrants community action.

If that tragedy didnt happen, that texas cowboy law would eventually be enacted here in ohio. The powerful gun lobby pushed it through 26 states, a profit motive, sell more guns.... Now, is that what you want? Do we gotta all carry handguns now?

"So, a person gets killed, and a bureaucrat decides justice aint worth the trouble. THAT is the outrage that warrants community action."

Now who says that? The Media? The Protesters? Did you actually hear both sides of the story in this case? Didn't think so, so it's OK for you to put all the blame on Zimmerman (because of the media and the media hounddogs) and that's acceptable? Ask me this, why in the world would the Sanford Police cover up anything? You would prosecute someone without knowing all what happened? Wouldn't the Sanford Police arrest this guy and calm down and disburse the idiot protesters? Maybe they know more then you and the media, that ever occur to you? This is nothing but a media circus pushing the bounties of racism. No more no less. White Hispanic says it all! Amazing the stupidity of some people on this planet.

NOTHING warrants outrage and hate filled responses or a bounty on someone from a RACIST group. None whatsoever, won't accomplish NOTHING and all it's doing his dividing the races. Is that the plan?

""The powerful gun lobby pushed it through 26 states, a profit motive, sell more guns.... Now, is that what you want? Do we gotta all carry handguns now?""

Answer this question: How come ALL the criminals are carrying guns? You think they registered there guns or are they stolen? Don't have to be a rocket scientist to answer that.
So what will it be, all the criminals can carry but not the Innocent citizens? Doesn't seem fair to me does it to you?
