Local anti-Limbaugh effort gets 2,743 signatures; national figures join fray

YOUNGSTOWN

The petition being circulated by state Rep. Robert F. Hagan of Youngstown, D-60th, to have conservative talk-show host Rush Limbaugh removed from Youngstown radio had garnered 2,743 signatures as of Saturday night.

The goal of the petition, available by clicking here, is 3,000 signatures.

Limbaugh, whose nationally syndicated show is heard on more than 600 stations, airs locally on 570 WKBN-AM.

Limbaugh came under fire for calling a Georgetown University law student derogatory names after she testified to congressional Democrats in support of national health-care policies that would require employers to offer group health insurance that covers birth control.

By Thursday, at least 45 advertisers had pulled their ads from his show, according to politico.com. Several stations across the country have dropped his show, and on Saturday, nationally known feminists Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan and Gloria Steinem, who co-founded the Women’s Media Center, called on the FCC to remove Limbaugh from the airwaves totally.

In an editorial published by cnn.com, the women wrote: “Limbaugh doesn’t just call people names. He promotes language that deliberately dehumanizes his targets.”

They also noted that a coalition of Iraq and Afghanistan female veterans are demanding that the American Forces Network drop Limbaugh from its programming.

“If Clear Channel won’t clean up its airways,” the editorial continues, “then surely it’s time for the public to ask the FCC a basic question: Are the stations carrying Limbaugh’s show in fact using their licenses ‘in the public interest?’”

The women contend that “Limbaugh has hidden behind the First Amendment,” or claimed his show is humor or entertainment for 20 years.

“He is indeed constitutionally entitled to his opinions, but he is not constitutionally entitled to the people’s airways.

“It’s time for the public to take back our broadcast resources.”

Isn't it lovely how liberals so readily embrace censorship of anyone they disagree with.

Doesn't this frighten anybody?? An elected official saying the First Ammendment applies only to those he deems fit. Especially "Buckwheat Bobby". Try to keep things in perspective. Rush is a talk show host,an entertianer, thats all. Sarah Palin was called way worse by Bill Maher and others and these "feminists" said nothing. Conservatives are bombarded daily by Leno,Letterman,Stewart,Kimmel, on and on. Do I demand their censorship? No, I have A life, which is something I recommend to those who signed the petition. Hey Bobby, this Valley has way bigger problems for you to focus on than a blowhard entertainer.

Dear Bob, Gloria, Jane, et al,

If you get your way and censor speech via cutting the wire carrying the message, the same will come back to haunt you and others trying to vocalize your message. I am an independent and want to hear all sides which include Mr. Limbaugh's and, yes, yours.

You want a newspaper? Try the Tribune Chronicle. We should petition to get them to expand circulation to Mahoning County so we can have some semblance of fairness in media reporting.

I never heard of bill maher and his cnt comment till these postings. Hes a schmo, small potatoes. Not the defacto leader and spokesman of the rep party that rush is.
People, all the big money, sears, home depot, are smart businessmen and figured out that its bad business to be aligned with the small toxic contingent of birthers.

Bob Hagen has plenty of other issues to deal with in the Youngstown area, we don't need anyone telling us who to listen to on the radio. We can always change the station or turn it off! Unless Rush Limbaugh is planning to undermine the US government, then he has a right to broadcast his opinions on his radio show!! Find something to do Mr. Hagen, that really means something to this valley.

What a group Hagen is in with, "Hanoi" Jane, Gloria Steinman, etc. This should really make him proud. If this is all he can do for this area it's time for him to go.

Rush can be heard clearly on AM 640 - out of Akron. Rep Ryan; Hagan want to limit the 1st & 2nd ammendments. Will the Vindy please run an article that list the other ammendments that should be dropped from the constitution.

Hagen, when are you going to zip up your lip and grow up. You have a penchant for being a loud mouth. You may think you are a smart politician, but you are nothing but a leeech. You are about as crooked as they come. I wish an investigative reporter would do an in depth study of your dealings.

We need Rush Limbaugh to let the public know what is going on with the left wing whackos. I can't say that I agree with everything that he says, but then I do not agree with everything Bill Maher says.....or the one million dollars that he gave Obama's super-pac.

Get a life Hagen. Go back to working on the railroad.

Whats wrong with this country, is that when conservatives promote their self-serving agenda, they lie. Whats really wrong with this country, stupid people believe them.
