Canfield Cub Scout Pack 25 members competed in the annual Pinewood Derby Race, sponsored by the Canfield United Methodist Church, on Feb. 19. Seventy-eight Scouts, siblings and parents all entered the races with amazing and creative designs.
When the racing began, the fastest times were clocked at more than 200 scale miles per hour. Scouts raced their cars three times, once on each lane of the aluminum track. The two best times were averaged to provide placement.
The track, which was purchased last year with Scout funds, is a feat of engineering itself.
The high-tech track features sensors to chart the speed to one-thousandth (.001) of a second and many races come in so close only the computer could tell. A software program tracks the progress and tallies the results quickly.
Each den ran its Pinewood Derby races, then the top three winners faced off for the grand championship.
The winners were Dylan Hartman, first; Stephen Pacheco, second; Tanner Tsvetkoff, third and Jared Russell, fourth.
For the siblings, Haley Tura took first place. All scouts voted for the Best of Show design, which was taken by JT Palmer.
The Pinewood Derby began in Manhattan Beach, Calif., in 1953. Don Murphy, creator and Cub Master for Pack 280C described his reason to create the event.
“I wanted to devise a wholesome, constructive activity that would foster a closer father-son relationship and promote craftsmanship and good sportsmanship through competition,” he said.
The history of the Pinewood Derby can be found at www.pinewoodpro.com, along with a book about Murphy and the derby’s history. For more information on Canfield Cub Scout Pack 25, contact Troy Homrighausen at 330-533-1237.
