LISBON — A jury has awarded $5.25 million to a woman who was severely burned in a futile attempt to rescue her paraplegic son from a May 2008 house fire.
After a four-day trial, the jury made the award to Barbara Morgan, of Amsterdam, Ohio, on March 2. Judge Ashley Pike of Columbiana County Common Pleas Court presided over the trial.
Morgan rushed to her son, Michael’s, home in Salineville, from which he had called for help because a fire had broken out in his bedroom, according to Atty. David J. Betras, whose Canfield law firm represented her.
Michael Morgan died from smoke inhalation in the blaze, which was attributed to his smoking in bed, a defense expert witness testified.
Braving flames and smoke, Morgan sustained burns so severe that she lost her left hand and now has limited use of her right hand.
The verdict was against the assets and insurance of the estate of Michael Morgan, whose administratrix was Michael Morgan’s widow, Juanita Morgan, of Lisbon.

So she wanted money for trying to rescue her own son???
And how much did our illustrious Democratic Party Chairman keep for himself? 40%? 50%?
Sounds like she sued her son's estate to cover her medical expenses? She was injured due to her son's negligence.
He caused the fire and she sued the insurance company for her medical bills. No wonder why insurance rates are always going up. Amazing.
What a slime bag. Betras well and truly showed how low one can sink. How does he live with himself ?
I wonder if this impacts the widow. This case should have never seen the light of day. I'm surprised she didn't sue the maker of the double wide. Just a guess.
I also wonder, why on earth did he call mommy and not 911? And what type of disability? Too many questions, not enough answers.
Hopefully the insurance company files an appeal to stop the madness.
This is sick. The democrat party is alive and well in Ytown and the citizens are suffering for it. Who in there right mind would want to bring a business to Youngstown? Wise up people!!!!
