Police continue to probe fatal hit-and-run accident

Staff report

Police are still investigating, and not releasing much information, about a weekend hit-and-run accident on the South Side that left one woman dead.

The Mahoning County Coroner’s office identified the woman as 53-year-old Vickie Toney of Struthers. Dr. Joseph S. Ohr, forensic pathologist, said Toney died from aortic lacerations and other chest injuries within seconds of being struck by the car.

According to police, Toney was crossing the street along Glenwood Avenue near Cleveland Street about 2 a.m. Sunday morning when she was struck by a car and killed.

Police believe Toney may have been leaving a nearby bar at the time of the accident.

Police have not made an arrest in the case but do have the suspected vehicle and are expecting to speak with witnesses and a potential suspect.

The car’s driver, police said, likely will face charges for leaving the scene of an accident at the very least.
