Youngstown police investigating city's 16th homicide

Published: Fri, June 22, 2012 @ 9:25 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — Police are investigating an early morning shooting death on the city’s South Side.

Police have not released the victim’s name, but have confirmed that he was shot at about 2:45 a.m. at Oak Hill and Falls avenues while walking to his car from a nearby bar. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police are calling the shooting an aggravated murder. It is the city’s 16th homicide of the year. The city recorded only six homicides at this time in 2011.

This homicide comes on the same day memorial services are to take place for Dion Weatherspoon, who was killed on the city’s South Side last week.

This is no longer surprising news coming from the south side and only proves the area has become too dangerous to be out and about in...especially after midnite.

Maybe it's time to restrict liquor licenses in the city and close the bars earlier.

DwightK, That is the dumbest idea I have ever heard in regards to violence on the South Side. Kudos Sir.

@VINDYYAK The South Side is comin' back!! Just wait till the city sell those properties, the owners get the restoration grants (and run off with the money!) It will be grand! All the glory of 1960's Youngstown!

God bless the family and friends of the victims. It's a shame you have to watch you back and carry weapons to protect yourself. How do these thugs continue to come into possession of these weapons? Every time the task force does a sweep, they end up confiscating dozens of weapons, how many of those weapons are traced back to the crimes and murders going on in our area? Are those offenders even prosecuted and given proper sentencing? What is a real solution, not a crack job fantasy some of you have, but a REAL solution to these problems we face here in Youngstown/Boardman?

Oak Hill and Falls, hmmm, there's a beautiful piece of real estate. Local realtors must be fighting over the listings in that area!

That stinks... I wish it wasn't so bad...

Does anyone know any reasons/causes for the increase and outbreak of murders? Why are they concentrated in this 1sq mi

@ zz3 seems to me like you like coackroaches because you seem to use the word alot when you refer to ppl. you must had them before so to keep your memory alive you use it as part of your daily vocabulary lol. you can go to an empty house or building and i'm sure you will find some lol. if you haven't notice crime is being committed by all colors. what did you say about the sick and twisted parents that rapped their little baby while on a vist at trumbull county children services? hmmmmmmmm im sure you didn't call them cockroaches no because that was one of yours lol. you seem to comment on alot of black things that take place but what about the rest. im sure if you look into your history somewhere down the line your people messed with a black lol. that shows you are ignorant and have no training. what if ppl made comments saying animal f**kers lol would you like that?

This just sounds like a typical misunderstanding. Proper protocol is that you contribute when asked to do so.
