Youngstown school board weighs levy, haggles over finance meeting

Published: Tue, June 12, 2012 @ 10:38 p.m.

Without a November levy renewal, the city school district will start deficit spending in fiscal year 2013, according to the latest five-year forecast.

The forecast was presented by Blaise Karlovic, interim district treasurer, at Tuesday’s regular school board meeting.

Karlovic’s forecast is less sunny than the last one prepared by Johnson, which included projected increases in some funds coming from the state.

“Levy passage is critical,” he said.

Tempers flared among board members regarding procedural issues.

Andrea Mahone, finance committee chairwoman, confronted board President Lock P. Beachum Sr. and schools Superintendent Connie Hathorn.

A big problem with Youngstown Schools is the staffing profile - mostly white baby boomers on big salaries . BTW I am one of this group .

The District needs to find a way of putting a fewe more representative ( but competent ) teachers in front of its demographic . Especially hire more younger teachers on lower salaries & thereby solve performance & financial problems simultaneously .

Students need authentic role models with whom they can identify in every way .

Correct the employee model is way askew. Also the leadership in command is once again creating jobs for friends instead of having employees do their required job description . Need more effective middle management and less figure heads. Just do it! Kill the rehire treadwheel. It is just wasting money they may not get cause I seriously doubt that a levy will pass.
