POLAND — The man killed in a traffic accident this morning had earlier been pursued by a New Middletown Village police officer. New Middletown Police Chief Vince D'Egidio said the officer saw the driver speeding on state Route 170 this morning. The vehicle's tail lights also were out.
The officer followed the car, attempting to stop it, but the vehicle turned on to Middletown Road, accelerated up the hill, the chief said. The vehicle ran several stop signs with the officer following. The chief said the officer estimated the driver was exceeding 100 mph.
The speed limit on Middletown Road, ranges between 35 mph and 45 mph, the chief added.
The officer followed, keeping sight of the car, but called off the pursuit when he lost sight of the vehicle near Evans Lake. A short time later, the officer heard of the accident on the police radio at the Five Points intersection. The driver was identified as Daniel Khawli, 24, of Austintown. He was driving a 2005 Hyundai Sonata. The Mahoning County coroner's investigator pronounced Khawli dead.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating.
