Car sales are down for the year in the Mahoning Valley compared with the same period last year.

There have been 197 fewer cars sold in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties through the end of June than during the same period in 2011, according to a report from the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio Inc.

The top five dealerships in June in new and used vehicle sales were Bob & Chuck Eddy Chrysler Dodge Jeep, 200; Greenwood Chevrolet, 199; Sweeney Chevrolet, 185; Taylor Kia, 179; and Fred Martin Ford Mercedes, 165.

TrueCar, a vehicle- information website, reported that June was a strong month for auto sales nationally. Vehicle sales have been growing in the United States for the year.

New-car sales in the Valley have fallen further behind the 2011 pace with sales off by 901 vehicles, according to the report. For the month of June, new- vehicle purchases were down by 117.

Bob & Chuck Eddy Chrysler Dodge Jeep has been one of the exceptions in the area with sales up by 32 for the month and 163 on the year. Two other Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealerships also have had strong years in new-car sales. Salem Chrysler Dodge Jeep sales are up by 95 for the year, and Columbiana Chrysler Dodge Jeep has seen sales increase by 115 for the year, according to the report. These are the top three dealerships in the area in growth in the number of new cars sold.

Three Chevrolets are the top selling models in new- car sales locally, but fewer of all three have been bought in the Valley this year. There have been 859 Chevrolet Malibus purchased on the year, which is 400 fewer than through the end of June 2011. There were 163 Malibus sold in June, up 17 compared with June 2011.

The Lordstown-built Chevrolet Cruze is the second-most purchased vehicle in the area with 697 sold thus far in 2012. Sales of the Cruze are down 437 for the year in the Valley, with June figures dropping from 200 in June 2011 to 95 this year for the month.

The rest of the top five in new-car sales were the Chevrolet Equinox, 454 sold, down 70 compared with 2011 through June; Ford Escape, 372 sold, up 79 from last year; and Ford Fusion, 319 sold, up 34 on the year thus far.
