Youngstown firefighters battle 4 blazes within 12 hours Thursday

Published: Fri, July 6, 2012 @ 12:04 a.m.

Staff report

In an effort reminiscent of the battle against a string of overnight fires in May, city firefighters worked to contain four fires in a 12-hour period Thursday, mostly on the city’s South Side.

Firefighters were called to a vacant structure on Brighton Street on the East Side about 11:30 a.m. The vacant home reportedly had been set ablaze intentionally.

Several hours before the Brighton fire, crews spent hours battling three South Side fires set almost simultaneously only blocks apart.

Fire erupted at an empty building on Oak Hill Avenue just after 1 a.m. That fire was followed within minutes by two fires set along Hillman Street. The second and third fires were at vacant homes.

All three fires appear to have been intentionally set, fire officials said.

Firefighters at the end of May battled 13 fires set on the South Side between the night of May 30 and the morning of May 31. Each of those fires was determined to have been intentionally set.

No arrests have been made in the string of fires from May or Thursday’s fires.

I'd say the people in those neighborhoods are taking it into their own hands to clean up the neighborhood of places for thugs to hide... can't say I can blame them... just hope no one gets hurt in the process.
