Ash tree infestation | What to look for

Published: Sun, January 29, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m.

The ash tree is one of the most common tree species, making it extremely susceptible to infestation by the emerald ash borer. Here are some ways to recognize ash trees on your property and whether they are infested:

Species: In Ohio, four species of ash trees are found, white ash, black ash and blue ash. Pumpkin ash are native to the state but not commonly found.

Identifying an ash: True ash trees have branches placed opposite, or directly next to, one another on the trunk.

Its leaves are feather-like and compound, meaning each leaf is attached to a smaller branch made up of seven or more leaves.

Identifying an infestation: Early signs of canopy dieback, or thinning of leaves.

Increased Woodpecker activity.

Serpentine galleries and D-shaped exit holes.

Bark splitting.
