Transit bus loses wheels on I-376 near Pittsburgh

Published: Thu, January 26, 2012 @ 3:11 p.m.

CARNEGIE, Pa. (AP) — The wheels on this bus went round and round — just not in the manner anticipated.

Port Authority of Allegheny County spokesman Jim Ritchie says the bus was on Interstate 376 heading into the city from Pittsburgh International Airport with about 25 passengers when both of its left rear wheels came off about 11:45 a.m. today. That happened near Carnegie, where the bus was about to exit the interstate for a busway.

The vehicle has two rear tires on each side, and the driver was able to maneuver it safely off the highway.

No passengers were hurt, nor were those in four other damaged vehicles. Two were hit by the tires and two more were damaged when they crashed trying to avoid the tires.

The cause of the problem remains under investigation.
