WASHINGTON (AP)
In a politically explosive decision, President Barack Obama on Wednesday rejected plans for a massive oil pipeline through the heart of the United States, ruling there was not enough time for a fair review before a looming deadline forced on him by Republicans.
His move did not kill the project but could again delay a tough choice for him until after the November elections.
Right away, the implications rippled across the political spectrum, stirred up the presidential campaign and even hardened feelings with Canada, a trusted U.S. ally and neighbor.
For a U.S. electorate eager for work, the pipeline has become the very symbol of job creation for Republicans, but Obama says the environment and public safety must still be weighed too.
Comments
Our President seem bent upon destroying forward progress in our nation's way of life.
Just keep everyone on food stamps Mr. President.
Obama had made it clear that a project of this magnitude -- with high stakes for public health, the environment, and our country's energy supply -- needed a thorough review. But republicans in Congress demanded an up-or-down decision in just 60 days, cutting short a process that was already under way with an unreasonable deadline
The possibility of better routes that better protect the environment need to be considered. This is nothing more than a political move by the teabagger/republicans for big oils bottom line. Only a fool would make an up or down decision on a project like this in sixty days.
I know all of you think you are experts on anything and everything but my union build the pipe lines that go through Northern California and Northern Nevada and I have worked on the Alaska Pipe Line. Whatever you build you will be living with for generations. If you are curious about what happens for generations when corporations make bad environmental decisions based on profit and you live in the valley just walk outside and you will have your answer.
Thank you, Cambridge, for a voice of reason in a sea empty of any sense of environmental stewardship.
If I am not mistaken this decision has been on Obama's desk for over a year now but he refused to act on it. It was the republicans that have been trying to force him to make a decision on it. But he doesn't want to offend his tree hugging base. But what's another 20,000 well paying jobs in this economy? And i am sure the Canadians will be more then happy to sell their oil to China. Oh well I am sure Team Obama knows best.
WE DON'T NEED IT! Obama has weighed the costs.

No Tar Sands
Also known as ‘oil sands’ in Canada, tar sands produce an unconventional fossil fuel from bitumen, a thick tar-like substance that is the lowest grade of crude oil.
Tar sands extraction has destroyed an area the size of Florida with pit mines, refineries, tailings lakes, and other mining activities.
In the United States, Utah has approximately 93% of all tar sand deposits in the country, and could produce 12-19 billion barrels of oil if all deposits were extracted.
Cambridge, you need to stopp huffing the paint. Obozo had plenty of time and plenty of staff to look at this. It sat on his desk for a year and finally Republicans told him they wanted and answer.
The last 3 years have been getting worse by the day. There is clearly a lack of leadership in the White House.
Obozo called out the Republicans recently, telling them they needed to get in line when it came to job creation. What does a job of this magnitude do for job creation? I am not an economist, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but even I know that this project will be huge when it comes to job creation. And it won't be any of Barry's puny government jobs taht last 6 months. These will be real jobs for real people.
This isn't a right or left issue, this isn't a union or non-union issue, this is simply an issue for America and our leader dropped the ball big time!
This man has one goal: destroy this country.
Wise decision, the U.S. currently exports more petroleum products than it imports. Why pipe this oil all the way down to the gulf? why not to a northern refinery? be cause it is for export! not to lower prices here! with all the profits going to the big oil companies.
And the amount of jobs it would create is more like 1,500 to 2000, not the exaggerated amount of ten's of thousands that the republican congress would have you believe. Also, if he had signed off on this congress would have full control over this matter , including environmental rules and regulations! Do you really thing that's a wise move? I think not!
Isn't Congress suppose to have this control?? Isn't this why we have three branches of government? If i remember my history classes correctly Congress makes the laws and regulations of the USA. And isn't these pipelines already running throughout the country now? And even using your lowball number I am sure that there are 2000 people that would love to have a well paying job in this economy right now. while we are on the subject how's that Alaska pipeline working out for use. it's about 40 years old now and no problems right? and the caribou and moose seem to be surviving?? oh well I am sure team Obama has this all factored in.. and i am sure that the middle eastern countries will keep that cheap flow of oil coming to us
Obama's stated reason for rejecting was that the effects of this pipeline had not had enough study in the deadline timeframe.
Funny, he didn't use this same logic in his rush to pass Obamacare, which even Pelosi admitted hadn't been studied (remember her "we'll find out what's in it when we pass it"?).
stewie.....You are correct with your job estimate count. the installation of the pipe on a cross country pipe line takes far fewer workers than people think.
The pipe rack obviously gets a head start on the pipe instillation. The pipe is then delivered along the route and picked with cranes. Most of the pipe is installed one full length one after another. Every so often you need expansion loops or compensator's to allow for expansion and contraction and those "spools" are prefabricated in a fab area. So far not many fitters or welders. As the lengths and spools are installed they are welded together by "rig welders". A Flatbed truck with a welding machine/generator grinders and not much else. The weld procedure is done in a way called "brother-in-lawing". A "chill ring" is inside the two pieces being welded together at the joint with one welder welding one side of the pipe and another welder on the other side, both welders doing multiple passes. Each welder has a fitter helping him with what ever he needs but for the most part they are helping prepare the next joint down the line. Every so often there are pumping/filtration modules along the way which are also prefabed. They are a lot more complicated than what I explained but take far less people than you might think.
There would also be support jobs created by pipe and component manufacturers and motel and restaurants would get business along the way. In Alaska there were independent "relaxation assistants" at the camps and when it all shook out they probably made more money in the end than the welders and fitters and they don't pay taxes. You can bet they will be following the route.
One more note. My union also builds oil refineries. As far as I know all of the refineries world wide are already running at full capacity.
Okay, we now have a overview in cambridge's eyes telling us all about pipelines and the fact that most of the welders and fitters were not too bright. You didn't catch anything did you cambridge? Sometimesit is just too easy!!!
Perhaps our boy from the "land of fruits and nuts' can explain how many years are needed to make this decision. obowser said that he wanted to put off the decision until after the election. Why is that cambridge? Perhaps cambridge should worry more about the future of 'fruitland". I see where moonbeam is pushing another tax increase. Enjoy as more companies and people get fed up with "fruitland" and leave.
