BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — In an up-and-down kind of campaign day, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich picked up an endorsement today from former rival Rick Perry but also faced new accusations from one of his former wives that he had asked her permission to have an "open marriage" after she learned he was having an affair.
The former House speaker also prepared to release his 2010 income tax returns, certain to bring fresh scrutiny to his campaign.
Two days before the pivotal South Carolina primary, Gingrich's political and private life were clashing just as new polls showed him rising as he looks to overtake GOP front-runner Mitt Romney in the third state to weigh in on the presidential race. Gingrich has seen his crowds grow in recent days after a strong performance in a debate Monday.
With the second debate of the week looming Thursday night, it was unclear how the new revelations from Marianne Gingrich of Leetonia in Columbiana County would play in a state where religious and socially conservative voters hold sway.
The interview with Marianne Gingrich, her first on television since the divorce from Gingrich in 2000, was set to broadcast tonight on ABC News' "Nightline" at 11:30 p.m.
In excerpts the network released before the broadcast, Marianne Gingrich said that when she learned of Gingrich's affair with Callista Bisek, a congressional staffer, he asked his wife to share him.
"And I just stared at him and he said, `Callista doesn't care what I do,'" Gingrich' second wife said. "He wanted an open marriage and I refused."

Anyone who calls themselves religiously or socially conservative and who supports this toad is a hypocrite.
In all honesty, who cares if Newt Gingrich, or anyone else has on open marriage. WHile I do not prefer or condone such a life style, it is 2012 for crying out loud.
I would prefer the guy have an open marriage than he cheat on his wife.
This is really a non-issue. If you are basing supporting or nor supporting any candidate based on who they were sleeping with a decade ago, then you are very small minded. The question should be, "Are you cheating on your spouse right this moment Mr. Gingrich?". If the answer is no, then move on to the real issues.
The question goes to character. I do not particularly care who anyone is sleeping with, but the problem is those on the right hold themselves up to be morally superior. When you put yourself in that category, then you have to live a life that supports it. If you do not "practice what you preach" then you are a hypocrite and there should be no support for a hypocrite.
when its the crowd that wants to legislate a definition of "marriage" and preach about the "sanctity" it is an issue.
people on the right wanted clinton out of office for getting a bj.
Bottom line 'brotha', Newt isn't sleeping around. This has little to do with his character today. The issue at hand is something that came up a decade ago. I am sure that all of us have things in our past, with the exception of ones that break the law I am willing to give a guy the benefit of the doubt. Especially when we are talking about something he asked to do (not actually did) 10 years ago.
I agree that what these people do in their private lives is their own business. I do have a problem with him calling for the impeachment of Clinton for lying about Monica while he himself was hiding the fact that he was cheating on his own life.
One more thing, If by some miracle the newt got elected I hope Michael leaves callista some relaxer.
jrolley- That is where brotha is right when he mentions character. What you do personally is of little interest to me before you are the president. Once elected, that is an entirely differant story.
I was neither a Clinton lover or hater, but he most certainly should have lost his job for not onlly his indiscretions, but lying after the fact. To sit there and declare that you "did not have sexual relations with that women" (which was actually one of the funniest lines in history after the dust settled) when you knew damned well you had is nothing more than a lie.
Try that with your wife. " It was only a bj honey, that don't count" Better yet, wha tif your wife was giving hummers to the guys at work, I would consider that cheating.
Clinton cheated on his wife and made a fool of himself, his wife and his office.
I think what bugs me the most about this guy was put into words best by Jrolley. For sure, politicians from both parties cheat on their spouses. But the party that wants to legislate the definition of marriage loves this guy? I just don't get it.
our choices are soooo sad.
The political right has no more claim to moral superiority than the left.
I didn't vote for Clinton but he got things done by working with others.
Something the current president has not learned to do.
cambridge, you seem to very familiar with this "relaxer" stuff. Is that a geographically specific product?
Can you believe that one of the alphabet networks would come up with this Newt story at this time. Just coincidence I am sure!!!
