NORTHFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Kraft Foods Inc. says it will cut 1,600 positions in North America this year as it prepares to split its business in two.
The Northfield, Ill.-based food company said today that it plans to eliminate the positions throughout the U.S. and Canada primarily from sales, corporate and other business units. It will not reduce its manufacturing. About 20 percent of the job eliminations are currently open positions.
Kraft is also reducing the number of its U.S. management centers for its grocery business to two from four.
Kraft announced in August that it would split its snack and grocery business into two companies and said these moves are needed to help the businesses run more effectively.

1600 people will lose their jobs and someone higher up on the food chain will get a bonus.
and a tax cut
The bonuses go to those who develop a plan to keep the organization solvent.
Unemployment checks go to those who worked to keep the organization solvent in the past.
What we as consumers should be very wary of is where does the food that we currently buy come from. READ THE LABEL. Our food is coming from China, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil.
What our compulsive need for the absolute lowet price is doing is encouraging merchants to import foods now, which is going to destroy our ability to self-sustain our country. We are on the path to reliance on the rest of the world to feed us, to provide us with clothing and to provide us with fuel and financing to carry us through the day. In other words, we are doomed!
If any of those countries ever is over-taken by a hostile regime, we could be toast! We all know that China is a communist government and I am at a loss as to why we continue trading with them, but be alert to what is happening in South America, where nations there are beginning to organize against us.
We have met the enemy, and it is us! Not just our government. We are the enemy. You, me, your neighbor, your sons and daughters, brothers and sisters. We have developed a fixation for the absolute lowest price. Oh, look honey, I can save 50 cents on a can of beans at Red Star Value groceries! That is all I hear people brag about...how much money they saved! READ THE LABEL, then think about why you are bragging.
We may be thinking we are saving money today, but think about why that 15 trillion dollar debt is hanging over our heads...and why it will soon be 16 trillion dollars by September. We just cannot continue this way...we HAVE to put people back to work in this country and get us off that borrowing wagon because the interest on that money will bury us all!
Vindyak, we trade with China because as consumers we want low priced goods. We'll sacrifice quality for price. There are a lot of low priced goods on our shelves because of China. As long as we buy it, they'll ship it here. THOMAS53 is correct. It's capitalism. Do you know what that stock price means to many peoples future regarding pensions, 401K's, and a decent retirement. It's just how it works. There are no gurantees in life. This fair and equal bs that one guy is touting is crazy talk. And as tough as it is sometimes, thank goodness we are capitalists. Would it be nice if all those people stayed employed at Kraft for as long as they wish. Sure. But it would be nice if everyday was Christmas too. Welcome to the real world.
@vindyyak A co. cuts cost and it's good for who own the co But as consumers shouldn't we look for lthe lowest prices I used to hear how people saved by buying car elsewhere. I've seen people try to get lower prices for my work or my knowledge of cars So whats the differense
The difference is we are losing jobs in America at a pace unseen in our history because we continue buying goods made in third world foreign countries. I am not saying we should not try to shop for a better price, but check the label first and make an informed decision. As more and more Americans lose their jobs, our tax base declines and thus our governments, that's local, state and federal must either borrow to overcome the losses, or must cut their expenses by laying off employees and cutting back on programs.
A good point to all this is the State of Ohio just announced today that they will not have the funds to complete the Main Ave bridge carrying interstate 90 over the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland. This is just the beginning. China is able to produce very low priced goods because they have a large pool of unskilled labor and they artificially adjust the value of their Yen to keep their prices lower in American markets. This is unfair trade.
Welcome to the real world?
We can turn this around if we want to, but apparently most of us have given up.
This is not the America I once knew. We no longer have the fight in us we once had and that is the real sorrow in this story.
Vindyak, When you think about it ,with all the free trade with other major countries, we have outpriced ourselves in the U.S. due to the level of our lifestyle. You could call it greed. There is no fight in the younger generation. It's called "entitlements", and it is destroying out nation. Gimme, gimme, gimme, and now it is broke and broken. Everything is broke; Federal, State, local governments, school systems, and on and on. Greed, handouts, and very poor leadership has led us down this path.
