COLUMBUS (AP) — Supporters of an Ohio bill that would impose the nation’s strictest abortion limit are delivering stuffed animals containing the sounds of beating hearts to state senators in the latest push to get the bill through that chamber.
The measure cleared the Ohio House in June. Backers had believed it was headed toward passage in the Senate before the holiday break, but Senate President Tom Niehaus suspended hearings on the measure in December.
The proposal referred to as the “heartbeat bill” would outlaw abortions at the first detectable fetal heartbeat — sometimes as early as six weeks into pregnancy.
Anti-abortion activists planned to have children deliver the stuffed animals today to all 33 state senators. The fuzzy bears produce the heartbeat sound when squeezed.
