Kasich is Dems best friend

Published: Sun, February 19, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m.

So, the assignment for this column was to grade Gov. John Kasich’s first year in office. I’m sure almost everyone expects me to give him a big, fat, red F-.

Wrong. Gov. Kasich gets an A+++. Not because he’s been a good governor. No, his administration has been a disaster. He gets a triple A plus because he’s done more to mobilize and energize the Democrats, Independents and disenfranchised Republicans than anyone since FDR uttered the famous phrase: “all we have to fear is fear itself.” And given his otherwise abysmal record, firing up our base and helping President Obama win Ohio may end up being the stellar accomplishment of his one — and I emphasize one — term in office.

Senate Bill 5

Let’s begin our Gov. Kasich retrospective with the obvious: Senate Bill 5. What a great gift! The governor supports an all-out attack on first responders, teachers, social workers who care for neglected and abused kids, and tens of thousands of other hard working men and women who serve the public. The GOP assault inspires rallies, spurs voter registration, helps Democrats build robust contact lists, and, perhaps most importantly, clearly reminds Ohioans just whose side the governor and his supporters are on. It was horrible public policy, but great politics for our side. Not so much for his.

Secret activities

Next let’s talk about economic development. His idea, set up a totally unaccountable entity called JobsOhio and keep its activities secret, including whether the money being doled out to businesses is actually generating a return for Ohio taxpayers. I guess we’ll just have to take the governor at his word and believe we’re getting something for the $100 million or more that will be handed out to business, including lots of his supporters, behind closed doors. According to a Jan. 31 story in the Columbus Dispatch, even Republican legislators have real problems with this scheme.

One more note on economic development. Although Gov. Kasich didn’t believe GM and Chrysler deserved government help and he and his buddies pilloried the president’s stimulus plan, he’s not shy about accepting applause for the positive things that are happening at Lordstown and the V&M expansion. Obviously, it doesn’t matter to him that both those projects were spurred by aid from the Strickland and Obama administrations and that he didn’t have anything at all to do with the progress we’re making. I guess when you’ve actually done nothing you have to take credit for someone else’s work.

Finally, and I only say finally because I’m limited in space, along with attacking working families and devising a double-secret plan to grow our economy, good ole Gov. Kasich helped push through a bill designed to undermine one of our most sacred rights: the right to vote.

Attack on freedoms

Unfortunately for him and for the eventual Republican presidential nominee, this attack on our basic freedoms has been stalled by the same type of referendum campaign that killed Senate Bill 5. That means that the millions of Ohioans who now understand exactly what he’s all about will be able to express their displeasure at the ballot box again in November.

That being said, here’s my hope for the remainder of Gov. Kasich’s term: More of the same. Please. Pretty please.

David J. Betras is chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party.

Government intervention in the GM/Delphi bankruptcies allows over 500,000 retirees to receive 100% of their pensions, while slashing those of 22,000 Delphi retirees by 30-70%! If this travesty is not fixed, then it can happen to YOU! President Obama must restore the FULL earned pensions of the Delphi retirees!

Does ANYONE realize that Dave Betras is bad for this County??? He was involved in the Attorney General Marc Dunn election party and led the Marc Dunn election finance campain $$$$ that had corruption written all over it. Now Betras wants to and has to the most part gone back to the old HANNI days of public corruption. He finally got on the election board just as Hanni did. Dave was looking to get Macejko elected so Macejko could dole out the assistant prosecutor jobs HAND PICKED by Betras, just as Hanni did, so that BETRAS was the "man" to go see just as Hanni was, when you had a legal (criminal or civil) matter before a County or Common Pleas Court. Now Dave shot himself in the foot and backed the losing horse and as Hanni used to say "to the victor goes the spoils". So what does that mean if you have Dave Betras or his law firm representing you in ANY COURT in Mahoning County (with maybe the exception of Youngstown, for Now). It Means you can forget about any sweet-heart plea deals, cases getting dismissed, or the grand jury failing to indict you (like Hanni got) with Betras or his law firm at your side. Forget It !!! Dave would have to try EVERY case to have the slightest chance of getting anything for his client and since we all know how well the public juries and Judges dislike Betras for his cocky attitude its A good chance that your going to jail, will be convicted, pay huge fines, not to mention HUGE ATTORNEY FEES to have Betras represent you cause everything has to go to trial.

You will lose any civil case, all by judge or jury cause this County is hopefully smart enough to see that Betras wanted to control the prosecutors office through Macejko just like Hanni did with Gary Vanbroklin and James A. Philomena, the former Mahoning County prosecutor who eventually did prison time. Betras did nothing but bad talk Paul Gains and his assistants this entire election Now . Betras is changing his tone saying how honest and great a man Gains is and how Great his Office was for the past 15 years. WHY? Because Betras' inside man Macejko lost and will have plenty of cases coming through Paul Gains Office (if your unlikely enough to have Betras or his firm reprsent you) and now Betras wont be able to get all those sweet-heart deals (Plea Bargins) and grand juries failing to indict or outright dismissed cases he was looking forward to with Macejko. Paul is going to stick to the letter of the law and let Betras have it thats for sure no matter how much Betras begs Paul for forgiveness. Betras has the nerve to say "Im going to sit down with Paul in the next couple of days" who does Betras think he is? There is no chance that Paul will forgive and forget. Just expect to be going to JAIL if you hire Betras. Its all part of the politics of this County. It was starting to change under Morley but the old dog Betras took us right back to the old gutter days. Betras backed the wrong man and now if you hire Betras or his firm LOOK OUT. So that pretty much includes EVERY COURT in this County (except maybe Youngstown) and dont look for Jay to be there much longer. You will have NO Chance Whatsoever of any deals in Boardman, Canfield, Sebring, Austintown, Common Pleas Court, etc..if Betras' firm represents you. Just think about it ? It has always worked this way in this County. Thats why the last Chairman (Morley) had common sense and honestly and did away with endorcements (aka. I Betras do for you and you do for me) Morley changed it so this type of corrupt buddy system did not happen again. But Betras being the person he is tried going back to the old Hanni days where backing the winner came with great power. Now Dave Betras and his Law Firm has NO POWER to bargin with Paul Gains' Office or any County Court whatsoever. Betras is still living in the day of the old Hanni times. He backed the only Attorney General in the History of Ohio who had to resign his office because of illegal money being spent, the money that Betras was responsible for. Then Betras was given the slap down the first time he tired to get on the board of elections. Betras is trying to move this County back to the old days of bad prosecutors and bad judges by using the old endorcements for favors buddy system and once again Pain Gains took a bullet for this County and stood up to Betras. The ONLY way to teach Betras a lesson is to hit him where it hurts. IN HIS POCKET BOOK. And to do that you dont hire Betras or his law firm.

Wow. How nice of Betras to be wishing and hopeing for more bad policies by Gov. Kasich for the next 3 years. Thats it Dave wish for all these bad things to happen just so Gov. Kasich loses the next election. In the mean time we bear all those scars for YEARS afterwards. Instead of wishing for more bad stuff to happen to us why not try to do something to help us dodge those bullets. But since there is NOTHING in it for Betras and because he yields NO power with Gov. Kasich then I guess we get beat up for the next 3 years because thats what Betras wants and hopefully we can pick ourselves up after we are beaten and broken fighting him tooth and nail. Your an a-hole Dave to wish this on us instead of trying to do something to slow him down if you cant stop him. But dont wish more bad things, some that we might not be able to change even if he loses like a private turnpike, private prisions. Cause maybe Gov. Kasich might not win but with you representing the Dem's its a good chance another republican will win. Just stop your stupid remarks.

Im sorry you still have "faith" but yes Betras did nothing but bad talk about Gains ANY chance he had during speeches or when in front of a News Camera. Betras said Nothing good about Gains. They were both Democrats and lawyers so Betras should have chosen his words wisely but he didn't. And your hiding under a rock if you don't believe that Betras hand picks (like Hanni did) who he wants the party to endorse and thats a fact. And its done so favors are passed around. Look at how many politicians, judges, cops, commissioners, lawyers, etc... that were arrested during the Hanni days when they used endorsements. Then go to the Morley days and see how dropping the endorsements lowered the arrest rate to like zilch...Betras hands picks the Precinct Committee Executive Committee and Precinct Committee people then wines and dines them (like Hanni did) and does some "favor$" for them and they choose who Betras says to choose. Thats the way it works. Dont fool yourself. Dave Ditzler (executive committee) receives the endorsement, Jerry Greene, etc... then those that dont receive the endorsement Betras then tries to intimadate the other people (Hughes, OZ, Goodin) from running using threats that if his "guy" (Macejko) is elected you wont see any deals or if my guy (Ginnetti) is elected you wont see any jobs for friends or family or he calls them names like fat and loser. Now Betras backs that tax loser, Patrick Ginnetti, from Struthers, (who owes $28,000 in back taxes since 2003) for the County Engineer over a great incumbant. Then Betras uses pressure to get Maricso to drop out who was probably one of the greatest engineers this county had and for who? A tax Cheat. So now put a tax cheat in that Office with millions of dollars of contracts for roads and we go right back to the days of 1994 to then Mahoning County Engineer William Fergus a participant in the criminal enterprise called public corruption. Just like the Hanni days when he used endorsements. Ginnetti was part of the "click" we call the Democratic party and Marisco wasn't. So Brtras backs the guy he can control (Ginnetti) and we the tax payers fall for it again. Bet the F.B.I is already watching that Engineers Office. People in this County should stop being told WHO to vote for and start electing great people again not tax cheats. When was the last time you heard something bad about the County Engineers Office? Dont say I told you so when that offfice is knee deep in do-do
