Struthers cupcakery to be showcased on 'Cupcake Wars'

Staff report

A new business will have its sweet treats featured on cable television.

Josh Bartell, owner of Bartell’s Cupcakery at 14 State St., has confirmed he will appear on the Food Network’s television show “Cupcake Wars.”

“We’re taping for Season 6, and we’ll be flown out to [Los Angeles] March 7,” Bartell said, adding the show is airing its fourth season.

“Cupcake Wars” is a reality TV show in which four of the country’s top cupcake bakers compete in three elimination challenges until only one remains, according to the Food Network’s website.

The winner receives $10,000 and the opportunity to showcase their cupcakes at a high-end event.

Bartell began baking cupcakes out of his Austintown home as a full-time business only six months ago. His business grew so quickly that he needed a storefront, and on the heels of the grand opening, Bartell learned he was selected for “Cupcake Wars.”

Bartell said he submitted an application and was then contacted by the Food Network to send in a video before making the final cut.

Although Bartell has found success as a baker, it wasn’t his first career. He has worked as a home inspector, a bartender and a car salesman. As a salesman, Bartell said he often put in 70 hours of work each week.

“I have three kids all under the age of 4. There would be days I’d barely get to see them,” he said.

So he began baking cupcakes, cake pops and cakes for all occasions.

Some of his most popular creations include Salted Caramel, Murder by Chocolate, Fat Gorilla — banana cake with peanut butter and chocolate fudge icing — and the Jimmy Buffett, which is a margarita cake with lime zest, sweetened lime and a salty icing.
