Dozens walk on Youngstown's West Side in stand against violence

Published: Sat, February 11, 2012 @ 9:36 p.m.

Lynda Wauschek loves the city’s West Side, where she’s worked for 38 years, and she bundled up in a heavy coat in Saturday’s cold and blustery weather to prove it.

Wauschek was one of dozens of people who participated in five “We Love Youngstown” community walks to take a stand against crime and violence. The event was organized by the West Side Citizens Coalition.

Wauschek is executive secretary of West Side Merchants on Mahoning Avenue. She said increasing crime concerns her; the shop where she works was broken into recently when someone tried to steal an ATM.

“We work here and we see the difference. If everyone hides in their houses and businesses, nothing gets done. You have to get involved in your neighborhood,” she said.

The walks started at five locations: Foxy’s Restaurant and Lounge, Strikers, Casa Ramirez, Molly’s Restaurant and Pizza Joe’s. Residents who did not attend were asked to support the cause by turning on their porch lights.

To solve West Side crime, yes walk...
walk into the inner-city occupied neighborhoods & drive the generational criminals OUT. Drive the gangs OUT. Drive the school drop-outs OUT. Drive the generational welfare city occupiers that live on welfare OUT...then close their windows; they receive free heat & have their windows open during the Winter! It's easier for them; the thermostat is too complicated for the inner-city occupiers.
Fix the problem & stop playing with the symptoms if you REALLY seek crime ended.

Streetlights, crowds and witnesses are almost always avoided by criminals.

Putting boots to the pavement is a great way to drive off crime. It is not easy to keep up, but my hat's off to those who care and try.

As one of the organizers of this walk I thank all of you for your support. We knew at the start we would be at the mercy of the weather and although we would have prefered the unseasonably warmer weather we were having we knew it might not be. We want to thank all the wonderful people who braved one of the coldest days this winter season to show your support. We incourage all residents of the West Side to attend our monthy meetings on the 2nd Tuesday at 7pm at Fellows Riverside Garden at Millcreek Park. Our next meeting is Valentines Day. Thank You all again..with your help We will continue the fight.
