The youth group at Canfield Presbyterian Church certainly chose the right day to hold its chili fundraiser Jan. 28.

On a cold and windy day, the youth of the church offered church members and the community the chance to warm up with several different types of chili.

The menu consisted of Cincinnati-style chili, mild, Italian with no beans, white chicken, medium, sweet potato chicken and vegetarian. The menu also included hot dogs, corn bread, salad, dessert and beverage. Take-out was also available.

The chili was made by parents of the youth and church members and the corn bread was made by the members of the youth group.

The youth group was raising funds for a mission trip to the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky this July. The proceeds will pay for gas, food and lodging for the youth.

According to Julie Angelo, youth leader, the group usually has a pancake breakfast, but decided to stick with the theme of Kentucky and have a chili fundraiser.

“We decided to tie our fundraiser into the destination of our mission trip, and we came up with a chili and corn bread dinner and we also wanted to open it up to the community,” Angelo said.

The youth group holds two fundraisers a year to help with its mission trips. The next fundraiser will be the Trash and Treasure sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 21 at the church.

“Our youth are amazing. They very much like to serve and our church members are very supportive of them. We have great kids, great parents and a great congregation,” Angelo said.
