Dobbins first-graders go indoor camping

The first-graders in Kim Aikens and Suzanne James’ classes were welcomed to Camp Learn-a-Lot during their annual indoor camp-out at Dobbins Elementary.
“Of course, it’s still a little chilly to camp outside, but our annual camping event offers a fun way for us to teach spelling, reading, math and social studies to the students,” Aikens explained.
Students and teachers came dressed for school on Feb. 1 in sturdy boots and plaid shirts. The students discussed fun things that happen during camping trips and teachers did their best to recreate the fun in each classroom.
The students had fun coloring paper “pet” snakes.
“My snake doesn’t bite if you’re a Browns fan,” said first-grader MaKenna Bricker after coloring her pet brown and orange.
Aikens and James each read stories with their students around a plug-in play campfire. Students brought blankets and flashlights and then aimed their flashlights at the ceiling and practiced spelling out words.
Before cuddling together for a camping movie, the students created s’mores with no fire necessary. Instead of melting marshmallows, the students slathered marshmallow fluff on graham crackers with chocolate.
