Man gets 10 to 12 years in prison in slaying over mattress

Published: Thu, February 9, 2012 @ 1:35 p.m.

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) — A man who was on the run for more than eight years pleaded guilty to fatally shooting a central Pennsylvania man in an argument over a mattress.

James Malave apologized to the victim’s family as he pleaded guilty to third-degree murder. He received a minimum of 10 years in prison as part of a deal with prosecutors.

Malave admitted shooting Hector Corneil in July 1999 in Lancaster while the two argued over a borrowed mattress. Malave was finally taken into custody in New York City in 2007 after he was the subject of a report on “America’s Most Wanted.”

Malave is already serving a minimum of 10 years for a killing in New York.

The Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era reports witnesses told investigators Corneil was armed with a knife.
