W. Pa. woman goes to trial in bank robbery for denture money

Published: Wed, February 8, 2012 @ 3:16 p.m.

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (AP) — A toothless woman who told police she robbed a southwestern Pennsylvania bank because she needed money for new dentures has been ordered to stand trial and remains jailed, though her attorney is trying to get her moved to a mental health facility.

The Observer-Reporter of Washington, Pa., says 49-year-old Evelyn Fuller is scheduled for a competency hearing, in part, because her Greene County public defender says Fuller can’t properly care for herself.

At a preliminary hearing Tuesday, Waynesburg police testified that Fuller confessed to robbing the town’s First National Bank on Jan. 20. A teller who is pregnant testified she was afraid after Fuller passed her a note saying, “Don’t call the cops. Give me $500. I have a gun.”

Police don’t believe Fuller was really armed.
