COLUMBUS (AP) — The state watchdog says Ohio prison investigators didn’t have the authority to take suspects in a contraband drug scheme into custody off prison grounds.
The report by the Ohio Inspector General also criticizes an Ohio State Highway Patrol officer assigned to the investigation unit for not taking a more direct role in the operation.
The report released today cites acts of wrongdoing during the May 2011 investigation south of Columbus and says findings had been referred to the Pickaway County prosecutor.
Prison investigators following a Pickaway Correctional Institution employee and two women suspected of bringing tobacco, marijuana, cellphones and cash into the prison handcuffed the employee and detained the women in a parking lot on private property.
Spokeswomen for the prisons system and patrol said the report was being reviewed.

they should get an award for outstanding work. The Prisons don't want the embarrassment when the fact that the majority of contraband and weapons gets smuggled in by guards.
Also why are we not hearing about any commissions to investigate human rights abuses going on in Prison? Being locked down by yourself 23 1/2 hours a day never seeing anyone but the 1 guard that takes you to what is basically a big isolated dog cage where you walk around in circles completely isolated from human contact. That should be considered torture, or at least cruel & unusual punishment.
People wonder why we have such a high recidivism rate. Its because the idea of that the prisons and or county jails are providing rehabilitation is ludicrous. You lock some one up for the first time with a bunch of predators that person is going to have to become a predator himself to survive, and its not like its some switch they can turn off when they get released either.
We need a government agency whose sole job it is to investigate prisons and jails to make sure they are safe, have access to educational material, and jobs inside. Statistics show that inmates with jobs are significantly less likely to commit crimes of violence inside prison. Short term reports that haven't been reviewed yet are showing that they even have a lower recidivism rate and yet the state is still cutting prison jobs, and they can't say its because of the money because prisoners only get about 30 cents an hour.
Alot of good info LtMAC, for to long jails and prisons have treated humans as a NUMBER and rely on pushing buttons to control inmates.
These prisoners need to be working on cleaning every city and state up in America.
Just sitting around playing cards, sucking up heat and air conditioning, watching cable t.v. is not the answer.
For so long the administration has pushed for limited inmate movement.
And commisary. Get these people cleaning bricks sweeping the streets, washing buildings,
When people learn how to work, then they will start taking pride in thier work.
Forced labor needs to be implemated so Jail seems more of a punishment , then a HOTEL. .
Well they should put inmates to work, but they also need to pay them. Don't worry most prison jobs don't pay more than 40 cents an hour. This will A provide a good service to the community at a very low cost, and B teach inmates the value of work and earning money legitimately.
As for commissary you can't just use the stick all the time there has to be carrots for the inmates to work towards, something to reward good behavior.
