Last guided hike today at Mill Creek

YOUNGSTOWN

Mill Creek MetroParks will have its last guided hike of the year at 2 p.m. today. The three-mile moderate hike begins at Ford Nature Center, 840 Old Furnace Road, and will journey along the eastern shore of Lake Cohasset.

Designate a driver for New Year’s

COLUMBUS

The Ohio State Highway patrol is urging motorists to designate a sober driver this New Year’s holiday and released a dash-cam video of a recent crash to reinforce the message. The video can be viewed at www.youtube.com/oshp and was taken Thursday when a cruiser, driven by a trooper assigned to the West Jefferson Post, was hit by a suspected impaired driver on Interstate 270. The trooper had stopped because of a disabled vehicle. The trooper and the person in the disabled vehicle were uninjured. The driver, Sherri L. Frank, 44, of Plain City, was arrested for suspected OVI. This crash was similar to and less than two miles away from where Trooper Frank Vazquez was killed on I-270 in 2001 by an impaired driver. Drivers can call #677 to report impaired drivers or drug activity.

Family escapes fire

PETERSBURG

Springfield Township firefighters and three other departments spent more than two hours Saturday night battling a fire at 13731 Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road.

Chief Matt Gebhardt said a family of two adults and several children escaped the home unharmed, and the fire started in the chimney about 8 p.m. and spread to the walls. Fire crews were able to save the structure, he said. Firefighters from New Middletown, the Western Reserve Joint Fire District and North Beaver in Lawrence County assisted.

Family Story Time

YOUNGSTOWN

The main branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will have a New Year’s Family Story Time. The free program is at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 8 and will focus on goal-setting, resolutions and tips for 2013. Each family also will make a time capsule to seal away until 2014. Children under age 7 must be accompanied by an adult. The main library is located at 305 Wick Ave.

Dive-in movie

Youngstown

The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, 505 Gypsy Lane, will host a “dive-in” movie-night event from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. Feb. 18. The movie “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” will be shown, which guests are invited to enjoy from the facility’s pool. Popcorn and juice will be available for parents and children.
